Bought a winch, hooked it up to the top of the garage, turn engine upside down on stand, attach winch to transmission, apply tension to winch, use a prybar to separate the two at the lip near the axle housing, when the two are well separated reach in and remove oil return tube, then apply more tension to the winch to pull it up.

Voila, it came off.

Check my 308QV posts, there are probably more detailed things in there. Mine was stuck as well. I used thin wooden wedges to get it started and all was going well, but the alignment pin on the back (passenger side one) was stuck. I didn't want to go nuts on the block cause the lower unit is kind of weak looking under it in that area. So, I would up using one of the studs (one was stripped already and happened to be right there) to hit with a ballpeen hammer and tap the block apart. I would say try thin wooden wedges, if not I would just bite the bullet and replace a stud afterwards if it gets damaged. Just be judicious when doing all this stuff. I had the engine on the stand (a vermet) and attached the block to a chain block from the ceiling to provide a little tension on it and so it wouldn't take the express route to the floor if it popped off. The block isn't that heavy, could pretty easily be carried by two guys (without the heads on it).

Ric

I got the two nuts at the back near the flywheel off too. But it is still tight. What I think I will do is to buy a winch, hook it up to the top of my garage, and apply some lift to the transmission while trying to separate the block. My neighbor will be around to help so weight will not be a big problem.

Is that the way? Or is it possible for two persons just to lift it off? What is a good place to bang on with a rubber mallot, or a hammer?

I assume the main cover is off the back (flywheel) side of the motor. There are two nuts back there that are easy to miss. The oil dipstick tube needs to be off also.

Be wary that the tranny and case weight quite alot and you don't want to just pop it off and have it fall to the floor. It's not rust holding it together, but sealant that is applied between the tranny casing and the block. Gentle prying or use a drift wedge to separate the two castings. Don't damage the mating surfaces!

My friends came back and the four of us lifted the engine onto the engine stand. I got some 1 inch spacers at Home depot so now the yolk fits fine.

I got all the bolts and nuts off between the block and the tranny housing. THe only thing holding the two pieces on are friction, whatever rust there is, and a big guide sleeve for when the two go back together.

But it would not budge. The engine is on a stand right now so I do not exactly have a lot of leverage.

How do you separate the two pieces?????
