One at a time, remove and replace every contact terminal on the coils, sensors and modules and spray with an electrical cleaning/contact spray (NOT WD40) which they use for computer and electronic circuits. If that does not work, go to the FUEL FILTER and replace it. Then try plugs etc as per the other posts. QV's have a habit of bad contacts and dry joints. |

I would check your extenders too. They come right off of the end of the plug wire. Just give them a firm pull. |

The O2 sensor is not likely. Cars run fine with them disconnected. |

Ken, I like Brians idea and I would also do what Greg and Dave mention, check gaskets and plugs. It sounds like a bad O2 sensor. What does the exhaust smell like? Gassy? Oily? Did you do a compression test on the car? Perhaps the timing is WAAAY lean? ANYONE? |

Sounds like the O2 sensor control module may not be working, normally a relay goes bad and you lose the input voltage. You can do a quick check by feeling if the frequency valve is buzzing (located alongside of the fuel dist head). Then check the spark with a timing light on each coil wire to make sure both coils are firing, if so, check our favourites the plug extensions. It is unlikely to be anything more sinister/complicated. |

Pull and check all the spark plugs for color and condition. You can probably trouble-shoot this to a front versus rear bank problem, or its a problem effecting both banks. Check the timing belts. Attach a timing light to the main coil wires and each of the spark plug wires to see what kind of a signal / pattern you get. Hopefully the previous owner did the 30K service before selling it to you. |

Ken, It sounds like it's backfiring through the intake. That's why you hear it from right side of car where the air intake is. Normally this indicates a too lean condition which can be caused by a lot of things. I would check the air flow sensor plate for binding and also check for vacuum leaks. The gaskets between the intake runners and plenum chamber are one place to check. The problem could be in the ignition as well, but I would do the free/cheap checks first. Another free spot to check is inside the distributor caps. Often oil leaks in and can cause problems. If you have had an emissions test, sometimes that will give clues. If this car has not had a major service, now is a great time. Proper running QV's run like tops with good throttle response, etc. Since you have not had this car long, I would try to talk to the last owner for clues as well. Dave

My 1985 308 QV with 25K miles is not running well. Ever since I purchased the car several weeks ago the engine seems to be hesitating and does not run smoothly under 5K RPM. It also seems to be lacking power throughout the power band. And when I am accelerating at a normal pace, the engine sounds as if it is missing and makes a popping noise that echos to the right front passenger compartment. This noise is not a backfire and does not occur unless I am accelerating. The noise usually occurs around 3K-4.5K RPM (but I may be wrong), and appears to be coming from the right bank of the engine. What is wrong with my car? My mechanic thinks that a valve may be too tight and in need of an adjustment. The other possibility he thought of is that the ignition module may be shot (is this a common problem with the 308 QV?). Any input would be greatly appreciated. For the sake of my sanity, I hope that the fix is cheap since my wife is still on the warpath from having purchased the car. TIA. Ken Ross 1985 308 QV
