My 87 TR had the same problem. My mechanic(who is a very smart porsche mechanic) put in a relay between the battery and the solenoid and the problem is no more. It starts even when extremely hot. He is in Los Angeles by the way. |

Yesterday I was at the Ferrari shop and here the mechanics were holding a stock isolation switch and damning it right and left. They have a racing car that runs off the battery only. High speeds the engine would sputter like crazy. After tearing everything else apart they finally figured out the switches contacts would bounce around - opening and closing thus---And the switch looked new! Contacts get corroded, heat up due to resistance thus fail when hot. And ambient temp. doesn't need to play a factor. |

Hi guys again, Hey billy zissis how are you? I have more valuable information about the hot starting Testarossa!!! As I told you in previous article that my problem is ended with starting at hot but it is not as the problem came back!!!!Anyway, but this time I found the original problem behind it!!! I found out the that battery isolation switch which locate in the package compartment is faulty as it wont isolate the power even if it is on off mood. So,I suspected the switch is faulty internally and because the contact inside switch is faulty causing it when it gets hot by the current it wont contact the power to the starter when it is hot until get cold!!!Anyway, what I did is I isolated the switch from the battery hot cable and jumper the switch and until now the problem gone.I can start the car even if the ambient temp. is about 55C.Oh yes, don't forget I am in Saudi Arabia . I hope any body has the same problem can do what written in this page. Take care guys and bye bye. |

William, I thought from as far back as the 365 BB the starter was always on top of the block? |

I bought some starter motor insulated "blankets" for my 68 Vette & my 68 Ford Falcon race car to cure the overheated starter problem. Try some Vette catalogs or make up your own with some flexible insulation & a little velcro They relocated the starter up top on the 512TR so it doesnt overheat |

Optima is hands down the best battery. Nothing else comes close to be honest with you. We use them in all the emergency vehicles because of the high strain put on the battery with all those strobes, radios, etc. (I'm on rescue) in my town. They have a new one out that is an orange top (the different types are color coded) which is supposed to be good, but I haven't heard that much yet about it. |

I'd also check into a battery brand called Optima. I have heard nothing but good stories about how they can sit for extremely long times w/o charge and easily support high cranking amp requirements under heat stress.. Here's a link to their page http://www.optimabatteries.com/main.htm |

Thank you Houssam. I will try changing the battery this week. You know how annoying it could b e when the car won'tstart in public and everyone is staring. But they are more than eager to help me push start the car. Embarrassing or fun? A little of both. Thanks! |

HI Billy, Tell you the truth I don't know the brand of the Battery but I will check it when I go home.I think it is nothing to do with the brand of the battery but its the starting current you are looking for.Let me check for the current starting on my battery and the brand and I will email it to you. By the way,as I am in saudia Arabia and the local electrical shop dose not have repair kit for the starter.Yes you are right it is Bosch starter.Do you know a shop that sell this Solenoid as I tried to get it from Bosch dealer here in Saudia and refused as he said it is reserved for Ferrari!!!!. If you can supply me with a shop that sell this solenoid and i can get you the # of it if you like I will appreciate you. Thank you. |

I took my starter to rebuilding place and they rebuilt for me for 100 bucks. Anyone can rebuild ths starter because it is just a regular starter (Bosch i think). What kind of battery do you use? I used the most powerful I can find. I think it is a Duralast Gold. |

Hi, Yes i have this problem in my Testarossa 1984.And as you told that when it get hot it wont start until it get got cold like after 10 to 15 minutes.Investigate about this problem and found that if the battery is not the recommended one by the car manual and it has the starting current. What tend to happen is the battery got hot and cant start the engine as the current drop. When it get cold, the current get high and start the engine.I changed the battery and seem to be ok since then. You said you changed your starter Solnoid. Please tell me where you get the solenoid from as i need one for my Testarossa. Thank you. Regards Husam |

Does anybody out there have a problem with starting their TR or any Ferrari for that matter when the engine is hot? I have changed the solenoid about four times and still does not work. After I shut off the car after an exhillirating drive all it does is click...click..click. After clicking it for 4 or 5 times it eventually starts. Any ideas? |
