It is not hard to replace syncros, have to pull the motor. Main problem is that you used to be able to buy the parts from ZF but FNA stopped it.

Yes, but is it a certain type of use that causes wear? I have seen many 100K + Ferraris with original gearboxes that function fine so, I think maybe misuse is a better term. I was hunting for more of forcing the car into gear, very rough shifting etc. I hope that this makes my question more focused?

Use makes it wear out. 2nd is crappy from day one I think. I dont think it can be changed with the engine in the car. You can access the input shaft with the bellhousing removed but Im not sure if you can disconnect the gear selector shaft from inside the pan and pull it all out the left side to change the syncro blocker ring. Its harder for the syncro to slow down the gear for engagement thats why it can work one way and not the other.

Are they sure that the synchro is in need of replacement? What makes a synchro go bad?

It may be time for me to replace the 2nd gear synchro in my 78, 308. Has anyone else done this, how complicated and expensive is this job? Is there anything else I should be doing while the dealer is doing this? Right now I can upshift into second, but I can't downshift into second. Aside from missing 2nd gear, am I hurting the car driving it without 2nd. I don't track the car, although I was thinking of heading up to Mont Tremblant this summer. Looking for opinions.
Regards, JP
