I just re-read my post and noticed that an error was made. The three-position slider I was describing is for the air direction control. It directs the between the upper and lower dash vents. The temperature control is a continuous slider. All of this needed adjustment on my 308. Sorry for any confusion. John

I was having the same problem with heat coming out of the system when the temperature controls were set to off. The temperature controls were out of adjustment. If you look under the fiberglass shroud on top of the spare tire compartment, you can see the entire heating system. There is a plastic slider that controls the temp setting with 3 dents or holes in the plastic for the 3 main positions. A small ball bearing drops into the holes. I cleaned all of the assembly and oiled the cable to free everything up and reset the cable so that the position on the control on the console matched the position at the control under the shroud. I hope this helps. John

Mark & Hans are right on:
Hans has got the controls figured out. My 308 GTS QV heater controls work the same.

Push air controls all way fwd when running A/C to keep air recirculating inside of car (max. cooling). I sometimes open them just a bit so some fresh air is injected.

Close off both temperature controls to keep coolant from circulating from the heater cores & heating any air that leaks past the closed air control valves.

All the dash/foot area vents are manual directly controlled. They are not attached to the air control levers in any way.

A lot of the heat in the foot wells comes from the radiator lines in the 'tunnel' between the seats, and from radiator heat leaking around the spare tire compartment.

Close the air control valves. Also close the under dash vents to see if that cools the footwells down. If it does you may have an air control valve problem.

Then try opening the under dash vents. If there's a noticeable amouont of warm air coming thru them with the air control valves closed you've got a problem with the air control valves.

On 308GT4's, adjusting the 2 slider controls to the middle of their travel will direct air to those lower vents. These controls are VERY confusing, as the owner's manual doesn't do a very good job of explaining them. I finally figured them out (sort of...) by studying various cut-away diagrams in the manuals. BTW, it appears that for the A/C to work properly, the sliders need to be all the way up. This cuts off air flow from the front-of-car inlets via the heater cores. The A/C then only uses recirculated interior air. Note that this may be 'GT4 specific.

I believe that heat around footwells comes from the radiator and heating hose routing. My 308 also gets warm down there.

Ken,
The vents under the dash are the same as the defroster vents on the upper dash. They do not open with the slide controls, you push them open and closed. You can also rotate them.
I've found that leaving them open lets air move through the footwells and cools things down a little bit.

Ken,
Can't help you with the vents, but all 308's I know have mysterious heat from footwell area. Aren't they fun?

It appears that the two vents on the underside of the dash (one on the drivers side and one on the passenger side) do not open when I use the slide controls on the center console. What are these two vents for and how do the normally open and close.

Also, it appears that there is a mysterious source of heat coming from the front of my car. It appears to be coming from the footwell, but I could be wrong. Does anyone know where this heat source is coming from?
