I just took delivery of a virgin, GT-4 flywheel I won on ebay, from Gentry Lane in Canada. A quick measurement, with a dial caliper, yielded 0.632 inches (16.05 mm) thick at the edge. This measurement clears the ring gear. |

With measurements of my 82 flywheel, I scaled the shop manual drawing and came up with a theoretical new thickness of 0.637" (16.18mm). Steve Magnusson's 16.00mm (0.630") seems plausible. The same shop manual allows a maximum of 0.8mm (0.031") total regrind. That would give a minimum thickness of 0.599 to 0.606". $1500 for a new one does not seem outlandish. |

It seems mine flywheel at 0.6 is thin but usable. So I will stick with that. I am not planning on driving this thing more than a few thousand miles a year anyway so it should last a while before I need to shell out $3K for a flywheel. Jeez, can almost have one machined out of steel for that much.

Peter -- I noticed that too (but I don't need a 308 flywheel). Perhaps someone from Gentry Lane is lurking? |

Steve M. there is (or maybe was, not sure when its ending) a brand new 308 flywheel for sale on Ebay (starting bid of $1500!!). Being sold by Gentry Lane Automobiles, Toronto, Canada. I'm a little strapped for cash and won't bid on this... |

We need people who are doing their 308 clutch for the first time (and really know it's the first time) to make some micrometer (or caliper) measurements on the unused portion of a "virgin" flywheel. Or how about the professionals out there -- any data? Mitchell -- I did the second clutch refresh on my ex-308 and this took the flywheel thickness from .622~.624 to .612~.614. If I had to guess, Id say the new value is about 16mm (.630) so anything down to about 15 mm (.590) is OK per the WSM recommendation of 1mm maximum material removal.

Mitchell, we've come to a pretty close spec here before. Do a Keyword Search in this site and you will find the stock flywheel thickness. Rule-of-thumb is you can machine down the flywheel until you cut half-way through the timing marks. No more. |

What's it supposed to be (miminum) for 75 GT4? Mine is smooth but only 0.6 inch. Is that good? The workshop manual does not have this spec. Mitchell |
