Ed,

thanks , good idea, I will get to the car this weekend to measure,

Jorma,
It is crazy, there are guys here that have Pontiac Fiero they convert into "ferraris and try and have as much oem 308 parts as possible and we ferrari guys are livin' in pep boys/auto zone trying to turn our cars into big red buicks!

As a 308 owner, at the current prices for 308's (some dangerously dipping close to below 20K) you get OEM part price fatigue very quickly! It used to really bug me if an aftermarket part was not EXACT copy of OEM (worrying about resale and all that), now, hell, I really don't look that close anymore.

Sam, if you will, measure the overall length from center of the two holes to make 100% that they are the same and let me know.

Doc..Not good news! The part # I gave you was correct, I just checked my receipt again from 6-14-00. What I did was take one off my car to the store and the clerk and I went into the parts dept and compared all the struts they had until we found one that was the same length. Do the same and you will find a match, I assure you!!

Just pull one of your struts off & go to the strut display in either AutoZone or Pep Boys. Find the closest matching strut. It'll be about 1" shorter than the factory one, and lots cheaper.

Make sure that the gas housing is no longer than the F* one. I believe that the mounting hole for the shaft was elongated, but still works just fine as there's always pressure on the pin, so the end can't wiggle around.

When I get a chance, I'll poke around at home to see if I recorded the mfg & part# in my 308 log, or (less likely) kept the receipt. Maybe the number is stamped on the strut.

vince: the Pep Boys say they don't have that part anymore. It does not come up on their computer...What was that hood strut for originally, a volvo, or what? If you can help, i appreciate it. I am sick or replacing Ferrari parts that fail two or three years later.

The two struts I ordered from Algar Ferrari in Philly also did not have the F logo. From what I have been told, FNA is out of the struts with the logo and they are hard (if not impossible) to find.

Mark,
Are those struts w/the F* logo?

That's about what I remember logo struts going for: ~2x non-logo ones! Damn, that white logo must be silk-screened on unobtanium...

Last year Margaret @T.Rutlands sent me the following:
"We have correct dimension, aftermarket struts, no logo: $32.00 ea USD."

Presumably they haven't gone up too much. When I was looking for struts last year, I got some from Auto Zone (Just before Margaret's eMAIL arrived-sigh.) Believe they were for a SAAB 900. They're ~1" shorter than the original struts, & a bit stiffer. The hood pops up nicely when they're released, is about 4" lower when it's open. Makes checking the dipstick a bit of a stretch.

BE CAREFUL, LENGTH IS CRITICAL:
The critical dimensionS for this strut is the closed dimension, mostly
determined by the length of the larger outer body.. If either are longer
than original it won't let the bonnet close, & may damage the mounting
brackets.

Coachi,

I had the same problem a few months ago and got mine through Lyle Tanner for about $100 for the pair. The first pair I received (with Ferrari silk-screened logos) had evidently leaked some pressure (I tested them to be ~40-50lbs) and wouldn't hold. They sent a replacement set right away which worked fine (tested at ~70-80lbs). Nice folks!

Be careful propping up the deck lid. Since the metal is thin and could dent the outside, use something to distribute the load on the stick end (piece of wood?). I supported mine in the middle to prevent torquing/twisting the lid. Also, the snap 'circlips' can fly off so hold a finger on them when you remove them. Applying a dab of grease before removing tends to keep them from flying off into the engine compartment. Don't forget to put some grease on the pins too.

Good Luck!

I replaced the ones on my 80 308GTBi, 2 years ago with a pair from Pep Boys. Part #0-37495-92306 @ 22.99 each. Fit perfect and still work great today!!!

I purchased mine at Algar for about $100 for the pair. It takes about 10 minutes, one screw driver (to pop off the fastners), a broom handle (to prop open the engine lid), and a little bit of patience to replace them. Just be careful that the fastners do not go flying off when to pry them off. You need to put them back on when you are done. I lost one but the local hardware store had an identical one for .08. That may have been the cheapest repair on any Ferrari.

Good luck.

Ken

Has anyone had to replace their 308 Engine compartment hood struts recently? Where did you buy them, are there alternatives out there, and how much did you pay for them. Mine keep failing and one day that heavy hood is going to smash my head.
