Thanks Dino and Junior: I have only bought one strut from the dealer......My thinking is that only one might be bad. However, if I need both, then, the other one will be bought at NAPA......my dealer never suggested it. With the money I save using this site, I may even be able to buy my third Ferrari!!!!!!!! |

My 87 TR needed the hood struts..or I was going to have to start wearing a crash helmet....I went the NAPA route (on the avise of my Ferrari dealer!)...and they worked better than the Ferrari ones, were about $20/each, and have been working for 7 years!! Best of luck |

Hi, First time posting to this board. I have an 87 testarossa that I replace the front hood strut. I called a local ferrari dealer here and I ask for a more reliable strut than the original due to frequent changes, they told me to buy one from Napa Auto parts store with this part #819-5602 and it cost me cost only less than $19.00 each. I installed it and it work very well. For installation, I had the headlight on and open both similar side where the battery reside. Having a not to big hand help on removing / putting the strut on. NOTE: make sure that you put a bar to hold the hood upright before removing the strut. It took me less than 1/2 hour to remove and install. Regards Jr |

Bill, I took the easy way out, after looking the amount room, the size of my hands, and the amount of money left in my checking account, I took the car to LFSC and had them do the work. Sorry that I can't be of more help....Norm |

Norm, Can you elaborate on the task of changing them. Right side lokks reasonably accessible, but left looks very tough. |

I've had two experiences with the front struts on my 512- They are not easy to get at to replace, stuff in the way and not a lot of room. Also, mine work much better in the summer, in the winter even new struts can't handle the weight....Norm |

Ric: Just ordered the struts from the Ferrari dealer.....$51 each. I just assumed that they would be several hundred dollars each. This is one of those RARE times when an OE Ferrari part is priced reasonably. Thanks |

Ric: If the front hood TR set cost $60 then I will buy them. I will check with the dealer today. |

...Or maybe the rear struts last such a short period of time, as the BB rear hood is up "all the time...". Just a thought? LOL I, like Ric...don't like hunting for Ferrari parts and do much prefer having the car 100% OE. Never really thought about the angle vs. load factor...Must of been sleeping in the mechanical engineering class, that day! David |

I bought a set of front TR hood struts from Ferrari for less than $60. Expensive by Pep Boys standards, but not worth the hunt in my case. |

David: On my BBi the front hood swings past the 90 degree mark, so the weight of the hood is OFF the struts, thus they should last a long time.....whereas, the rear hood swings less than 90 degrees, so the total weight is on the struts, thus they last a very short time. I will use a broom handle to prop up the hood, rather than pay $500 for a pair of struts. Have you ever thought of having them rebuilt? It must just be some o-ring needing replacement, or such. This is not a mechanical part!!!!!!! Are these gas filled? There must be some way to rebuild these. |

Henry, That's a good question... I need rear struts for my BB, and my first call to the dealer was for $500/pair. Pretty outrageous since they last about a year, or so. On the other hand, the front ones have lasted almost 20 years, and still hold the hood up. As I remember, the front one are reasonable, or were years ago....Check OE sources first like Lyle Tanner Ent. (408-364-0881)...Your other option is to meassure the compressed length and try to match them up to a Sachs unit found at Pep Boys, or a Monro unit. After much time spent searching for my rear struts, turned out that they are the same as my daily driver (Audi S4) front hood struts!!! Regards, David |

I need to replace these, since the front hood does not stay up on its own. Where is there an aftermarket set? I don't even want to ask the dealer what he wants. Thanks.
