Edward, Wanted to thank you for your advice . Put the two bottles of positraction additive in and in acouple of miles the noise I was hearing was gone and it has been about a week or two. Thanks, Brent

It's made from Sperm Whales, NOT Whale Sperm. |

It's all done very differently now... The sperm whales are given their own stall, and are provided pictures of good looking gray whales to help them out... Some of them make good money doing this. |

Ed, They still make that stuff from Whales? I figured, by now...the enviromentalists would have stopped GM from catching those poor creatures...and putting their sperm in bottles. |

Without going into great detail, The Positraction additive is a cure, not a cover up. It concernes Whales. |

Edward: With the GM additive, are you correcting the problem, or just hiding it.....for the next owner? It would appear to me that with normal fluid, one should NOT have this problem. |

It is only available at GM dealers to my knowledge. I used two bottles. You should drain some of the existing oil out before installing the additive. |

Edward, I'll give that a try first. Can I get this positractive additive at Kragen or a Pep Boys. Do you remember how much you used? Thanks for the tip. Brent |

CV Jounts do not recognize hot from cold as to the noise that they make from my experience. You have a classic positraction clutch noise that can be corrected with the addition of a couple of bottles of GM positraction additive added to the transmission oil. Drive it about 50 miles and the noise should disappear. |

Joints are on my list to do as well. I was just looking at my Tweeks cataloge (porsche parts) 1-888-489-3357 or www.tweeks.com and they have CV joints for 930's from 76-86 for $129.95 each. I have yet to look elsewhere for them but does that sound like a good price? The part # from tweeks is 408-410 if anyone is interested. |

Brent, It could be either joint (likely on the left side, as you suspect)...Once you've got the axle out, it doesn't take much time to clean, disassemble and inspect both joints. The joints are the same as early Porsche 930, BMW 6-series...LOBRO PN-C.153.15.87.002 or BMW PN-33 21 1 205 840. Sorry, but I can't remember what the CV boot (kit) crosses to. I don't believe its the same as the BMW... Regards, David

Update: Drove the car later today at dusk with the all the temperatures cold. Just like before no noise when cold. I thought a CV joint was a possibility too. Makes sense as a CV could be gradually going bad. If it happens when I turn right from a standing start in first gear would it be the left inner or left outer? Thanks for the responses. Brent |

Brent, Dealt with this noise on my 308 and 365BB...Turned out to be an inner CV joint coming apart. Cheap, simple repair. Regards, David |

Once again I'm calling on the experts of Ferrari chat.com for their input. I was driving my 1982 308 in sunny So Cal today (102 degrees yuck). While I was enjoying my sauna on wheels I started to hear a strange noise from the back in the gearbox. Kind of a clunking/clanking. It only happened when I was leaving from a dead stop in first gear and.... turning right. It didn't happen if I was going straight or turning left. It has happened only on one other occasion and that is when I drove it on another brutaly hot day a month ago. So when its not so hot I don't feel of hear anything. My mechanic, Karl at Black Horse Motors in Los Angeles says it sounds like the limited slip differential plates may be getting worn. He also said some times they can make noise if they get real hot. He didn't seem to concerned unless it continued to get worse. Anyone care to put their 10 cents in? Thanks, Brent |
