Richard, that sounds about right. A place that only does auto electrics has done my 308 starter and alternator several times from my other cars also and generally speaking, the brushes and regulator gets replaced. If needed, the stator can be rewound and varnished for a few extra bucks. Everything is thoroughly tested if the shop is reputable. This is so much cheaper than going to a F car parts supplier. You save over 60% by getting your parts rebuilt.

I'm also curious what "rebuilt" means. I just had my stator and rotor replaced and everything tested and reassembled (with bearings and brushes I had supplied) and was charged about $60 for the labor. Stator and rotor were $50 in parts and it was $120 out the door. The case was cleaned up and painted and it looks nice (though I would have prefered no paint!).

The Regulator checked out ok,
so the alternator was cleaned and rebuilt.

$30 What did they do for $30? Did you get new brushes etc? A full rebuild? That is a good rate.

Thanks for the tips! Since the alternator has never failed to charge the battery I am hesitant to go through the process of removing it yet. I have got a spare voltage reg on the shelf and thought if it could be changed easily with the alternator still on the car then I would do that. That is a good hint about the ground straps. Maybe I will clean the grounds first. Are there just the two (one by the headlights and one at the battery)?

Thanks again for the help.

I would remove the alternator, have the regulator checked, and the alternator rebuilt.
The same service I had done, at a whopping cost of $30.39

Before you remove/rebuild alternator and regulator, remove and clean all ground straps and harnesses; there is a ground harness just below and behind headlight buckets/motors. Mine were soaked in oil and grime; I also seperated the ground strap from battery to chasis and cleaned the connectors. I had same problem with lights, seems to have solved it!

Good luck!

Does anyone have a pic of the voltage regulator. I am not sure what it looks like.

IMHO, if you go as far as almost taking the thing off totally, have it rebuilt, it's cheap.

The first time I took my alt out to replace the regulator. The last time I did it in the car. I still removed the alt from its bracket, but spun it around and sat it on the exhaust manifold so it faced me and simply unbolted it from the alt.

Its a quick job and the regulator is inexpensive.

A couple people have mentioned that they thought you could change out the voltage regulator in a 308 without removing the alternator from the car. Has anyone done it? How would you go about it?

The symptom I am having is that the output from the alternator seems to fluctuate with periods where the lights are very bright and the AC fan runs really strong and then periods where the lights and fan seem to be more 'normal'. The changes are NOT related to engine rpm, they are pretty random. The alternator light doesn't glow at all and the battery seems to always be fully charged.

Looking forward to your opinions and advice.
