Reading the archives here I stumbled upon several threads about many people having this same problem with the UFI filters, especially in 2001(when I purchased this particular filter)! I'm going to stick to the Fram. The Baldwin B253 also was recommended a lot.

Richard - I use the Fram PH2804-1. Never had a problem. I referenced the site only to give additional information. Sometimes the cross reference is incorrect. For example, one shop I went to cross-referenced the Fram PH2804-1 to a Shell filter that did not have the center tube. Obviously incorrect. Nonetheless, the Fram PH2804-1 IS THE CORRECT filter.

Happy to help.

I had the same thing happen on my 308 with a Purolator filter. I think it was my error in not tightening it down sufficiently. Big oil mess but no damage. I retightened it and now everything is OK.

Thanks James! I should have thought to check the Fram site. I'm guessing that I had the wrong filter - the rounded gasket just didn't seal properly. I tried the gasket off the old filter and it fits the new filter since the surface on the filter itself is exactly the same - so that's another option if I can't find the Fram. Hopefully the engine is fine and all I have to do is mop up all the oil that is now coating my engine compartment (and I had just detailed it yesterday!). Thanks again for the quick response!

Richard - The Fram part number is PH2804-1. The -1 is important as this represents the filter with the center tube. The Dino filter hangs "upside down", and the center tube prevents emptying of the filter at shutdown.

The pressure relief valve provides minimal adjustment for oil pressure. It is a screw, and I do not believe is subject to getting "stuck". I suspect the oil filter rubber seal simply did not seat correctly.

If interested, look up the filter at the Fram site (http://www.fram.com/), search for 1972 Ferrari - all models, and it will list the Dino.

Hope this helps.

Well, my car didn't like the UFI Ferrari oil filter I put on last night and proceeded to blow the gasket seal and shoot the oil out all over the highway. Hopefully I got her shut down in time. I'm supposed to go to Oregon tonight and am looking for an oil filter locally. Do any of you know a Fram or other common one that I could use?

Dino 246 filter, should match up to either of the following:

Ferarri (UFI) 2316200
Fispa FOE 025 (Italian brand from Torino)

The Fispa has a flat gasket (like common type) while the UFI had a rounded o-ring type gasket. Never had any trouble with the Fispa's so maybe my car just didn't like the o-ring type? Perhaps Ferrari of SF sold me the wrong filter?

Also, how does the oil pressure relief valve work and is it adjustable? I'm wondering if it stuck and just let the car build up too much pressure and that's what blew out the oil filter gasket.

Really want to make this trip so any help is greatly appreciated!
