I'd say it's easiest if you do install the flywheel (any diameter on the crank itself is pretty small so the angular uncertainty is increased). One way is to rig up a plunger-style dial indicator down the #1 spark plug hole touching the top of the #1 piston. Like valve work, it's better to not try to read the peak location directly, but rather sweep things over a few times to find the peak value and then note on the flywheel where the piston is "X" below the peak value coming up and "X" below the peak value going down (with "X" being something like .050") -- TDC will be between the two marks. My ex-308 recollection is that the flywheel is not precisely pinned to the crankshaft so there's more slop than usual (but this might vary with year/model). |
