Now that depends on the RPM of the pump & the density of the fluid.
Anyway, ..,,,, But I know that the design with the Straight "Radial" fins, that are on the pump model easier to build,,,,,,, this pumps design resides at the limit of the 1/X^2 pump model. (This is with an ordinary differential equation with the form of 1/X^2..... there are always error corrections added. Depends on how efficient you want the pump to be.) But if the theroretical limit is "Straight" Then the ideal design must be Spiral.

Math has it's limits in the real world.,,,,,,,,,,, Damn Bernoulli, had to go and discover "headloss in a closed system". (ha ha)

How come the spiral shaped fins would be more efficient?

The Volutes (Fin Cavities) with the swirls, are more difficult to produce. I'll Bet that's why Ferrari went to the Straight "Radial " shapes on later H2O Pump models.
The volute shapes on my H2O pump impeller were radial. (1985 Mondial cab. QV)
I would install an spiral "exponential" shaped volute (equation 1/x^2) in my pump, if I had a choice.

I thought they changed the impeller design too. Early ones had a trailing blade (almost like the rim of a 512M and later ones had straight blades). Maybe it was a different model.

The upgrades are slight, but as others have mentioned this is the later QV housing water pump with the bigger diameter bearings. More sturdy. Also their is a brass bleed nut on top of the thermostat housing that my 75 gt4 does not have. Those are the only differences I can see.

"What is upgraded about it?"

Not 'upgraded', but 'updated'. The early 308's had water pump bearing problems and the outer housing was redesigned. This is the later of the two designs.

Great pictures! By the way, for which models/years is the update? Thanks.

My water pump looks just like this, but dirtier. What is upgraded about it?

I snagged some pictures from E-Bay of a new water pump. They're a good reference for those who are considering removing theirs. This is the "updated" water pump, by the way.
