Thanks all, great help and prevents me from doing something stupid and destroying a very pricey instrument cluster. I just had to do a repair on my steering column mounted "combination switch" -- it was like brain surgery, the plastic is so delicate and I had to use surgical tools and a lot of ingenuity to fix, I can warn everyone about two things --1) Never valet your older Ferrari (sorry SoCal guys!) and 2) Never let your buddies borrow your Older Ferrari and 3) Be very very very gentle with that switch when turning onthe lights, wipers, washers or turn signals. The plastic on those things is starting to go and we are all going to have some big problems in a few years. Back to sound systems, if anyone has any really nice set-up/installs they are proud of please share and show-off! |

The dash bulbs replacment for brighter light are Sylvania lamp 3893 (T4W) for the larger bulbs, 2723 for the small ones and 89. Makes things "twice" as bright! And if the dash dimper switch isn't working just jumper it out of the circuit, they have been known to catch fire anyway. |

I bought my bulbs at Pep Boys like: http://www.ferrariclub.com/faq/dashlights.html recommends. I still haven't actually done it yet because the only time I've driven it at night , it really wasn't bad(and it looks difficult to get at the lites). I'm waiting until something burns out. |

I don't have the stock speakers in mine, but it shouldn't be hard to change to whatever ones you want. I would put the CD changer and amps in the trunk, you could tuck them on one of the sides and it would look really pro. It's pretty well insulated in there anyway so they would be fine (I mean the trunk like the zipper compartment). Yeah the illumination kit made it better, they still aren't the best, but a lot better than they were. It was a little bit tricky getting them in, but it's worth it. I guess you could get the bulbs from a store, but I figured it was just easier to get them from Italian Car Parts, this way I had the right number and sizes of the bulbs, because although it wasn't super hard, I wouldn't want to make a habit of replacing those bulbs. |

I wouldn't recommend the trunk -- gets very hot back in there. |

Thanks Bret and David, This is a huge help, I hate to figure these removal methods on my own from expereince since with Ferrari parts, a expereince can become a expensive teacher. Are the stock tweeters and door speakers already wired into the harness, if so where can I get at them, I don't think my aftermarket radio is hooked into them. Since I have cats, (USA QV) I am thinking of locatingthe amp and CD changer either inteh ttrunk ( as if there was room to spare!) or in the front boot somewhere (ditto!) maybe amps under the seats. by the way --BRET, how did the improved dash illumination kit from italian auto work out, does it make a difference, worth it or just better off buying the bulbs yourself, how did you remove the instrument pod cowl? thnaks for the all the generous help. |

Yeah, my 85 308GTSqv has those tweeters too. The doorpanels are pretty easy to take off. You just loosen all the screws along the edge and unbolt the three nuts under the armrest. Then you slide it up a little and towards you a little and it works it's way out. You can also disconnect the tweeters and the mirror switch (on the driver's side), you will see the tweeter connections hanging there and the switch has a plug that takes all the wires and plugs it into the actually switch on the door. |

Sam, I've had good results with this configuration: Good pair of low-profile, 5 1/4" (Steve is correct) 2-ways in the doors; a pair of small (2-3",) mid/high range, free standing (not recessed) units mounted behind each headrest, using the small rear deck for attachment; and, to bring out the low tones, an 8-10" woofer (not sub-woofer!!) mounted at the front of the passenger foot well. (If your car has cats, there are some small electronics boxes here which you will have to reposition). You can also fit a couple of mid-sized amps between the woofer and the floor board. If you package well (be sure to allow air flow for cooling of your amps), you only lose about 6" of leg room (who cares about the passenger's comfort anyway!!) This setup works very well (many different flavors could be tried), and best of all, it doesn't molest the car or its trim. |

thx -- helps me do the shopping/choosing before the removing/installing. I noticed there are tweeters up by the door latch on my '83 qv-usa, could that be? I don't think these are hooked up. Also ideas on ez-careful door removal would be helpful -- always good to know ahead of time what you are getting into esp. since ferrari uses some intersting build methods and fittings sometimes. |

Sam -- I believe the stock door speaker size is 5 1/4", but I recall being limited depth-wise (so monster magnet structures wouldn't fit). |

I thought I would start a new thread on music systems installations in the 308 (there might have been an old thread here at some point but couldn't find one). I need to know what size speakers go in the doors, best way to remove door panels, power issues for amps, location of cd players, amps and routing of wires, maybe even favorite road tunes. Yes, I know the musical note of the Ferrari exhaust is all you need but for those special moments I can always turn off the stereo. Minor unrelated item, best way to adjust the targa top latches. |
