Bill I agree totally. So now I don't have to post.

I've never disected a 308 muffler, but it appears that both inlet pipes feed a common muffler cavity, which then exhausts out separate outlets. I'd be surprised if the exhaust from both banks didn't thoroughly mix within the common chamber. If this is the case, it is unlikely that exhaust from one inlet branch could be compared to that from the other bank. Past discussions have established that flow through the outlet pipes is not even at idle. This may mean that the reason you see white smoke from the left pipe is because of the way the gases flow within the muffler. The bottom line is, I don't believe you can point to single bank of the engine as the source of the white smoke from looking at the tail pipes.

Jorma

the reason for the difference between left and right is it's a transverse engine and the left pipe from manifold to box is much longer therefore taking longer to warm and thus producing more condensation

Bill, my car used to do that for several months after I bought the car. Since I drive the car often, it has stopped any smoking it ever did during warm up. Would you believe my car does not smoke or drip anything anymore?? It just tickles me pink!

I had white smoke from my Jaguar, and it was failure in the cylinder head gasget. Water leak to one cylinder. Sorry to say but there is allways a reason for two cylinder banks to work different.

As always, thank you for your opinions--this site is wonderful! Ken, I think you're right--I need to stop worrying about it so much. It's my first Ferrari and I think I tend to put it under a microscope every time I start it up.

I had ask this question some time ago regarding the 328 we own. Left water vapor at startup, when warm, none.
I was told be many that know the car, it's normal.
Don't worry about it, John

Bill:

Your car sounds fine. The 308's tend to emit a fair amount of "white smoke" (not really smoke - more condensation) until the engine warms up. After about 5 minutes you should not see anything coming out of the exhaust. Stop worrying about the car and drive it, but do remove the cats soon.

White smoke is water. Many QVs have a little white smoke if they have cats etc. My QV doesn't smoke and it has full smog but in winter I will get a little condensation at the very tips of the left tailpipe. A by product of the cats is water. If it is a small amount I wouldn't worry too much but if it is a thick large cloud that keeps coming from the exhaust then it is something to worry about. It is more likely woater burning off.

I 've noticed white smoke emanating from my left exhaust pipe while warming up my '85QV, along with evidence of water condensation at the tips. It's not consistent and I've never noticed anything with the right -side exhaust . It ceases once the engine begins to warm up.In another thread ( "exhaust burbble" ), I reported finding out that a mechanic "tweeked" the fuel mixture to run richer than stock. Could this white smoke be from extra fuel or do you think it's merely water vapor burning off at warmup? As always, your input is valued.
