The switch is indeed for the "rear" fog light. This was used in all years of production, however, only in the European market......the US did not allow this. The indicator light (orange) would be the second light down, to the right of the oil temperature gauge.....below the green "front" fog light indicator. This is seen on page H1 of the TR workshop manual. I have rear fog lights on my 83 Boxer. The are rectangular in shape and red in color. I first thought of these as reflectors. There is a separate switch for them, however, the switch only turns them on when the front headlights are on. I hope this helps. |

Steve is correct, I have never seen a foglight switch in the center. My center button is not dummy however. Former owner added another power socket in the center spot so, you can run a phone and power the radar at the same time. |

bruce -- mystery solved! -- it's version-related rather than year-related. The US version TR OM 634/90 is exactly the same as 536/88 OM (which, I think, wrongly shows the fog light switch in the center position and the unemployed switch on the driver's side). The SPC (587/90) shows the fog light switch on the driver's side (my '91 is the same) and the center switch position being either: 121609 Rear fog light switch - Not for US - SA - J or 120644 Dummy switch My US '91 has the dummy switch (it looks like the other switches, but the button really doesn't move/actuate and is just a sort of black plastic plug). If your car has the functional switch 121609 installed in the center position -- and just what a rear fog light is -- are mysteries I leave to you... |

My guess would be that it was used in the early TRs for something (come on people! -- someone must have a TR OM before 536/88 that they could check), and that when the function was removed they still needed to fill up the hole in the console -- I'll have a look at my '91 tonight to see if/how the design evolved further. |

bruce -- the 536/88 US version OM shows the three switches in the figure on page 23 (from LH driver's side to RH passenger side) as: #11 -- Unemployed switch #12 -- Fog lights switch #10 -- rear heated window switch (it's probably easy to move them around to get your configuration) I don't have my copy of the later 634/90 OM to see if they changed it later on. Perhaps if you can get a copy of a TR OM before 536/88 it might give a more useful previous description than "unemployed switch". |

Bruce, it's the passenger ejection switch. It only goes off when it senses someone on the seat. :-) |
