does anyone know the delco equivilent of the 348 alternators.

I have a 1985 early one that puts out a paltry 105 A. I heard that this is really a jeep alternator and if so then www.mean-green.com sells high output (140 - 220a) and high heat jeep alternators for $350. Also I know that Ferrari recognized this problem and switched to a higher output alternator on the 348, I don't know the year but I heard that purchased outright (for a retrofit to a earlier year) is about $1,000.

Any info would be helpful.

Have Ferrari changed the brand of electrical parts, almost everything in my 308 GTSi is BOSCH including the alternator.

I would be willing to bet that the 348 uses a Delco CS130 alternator which is a good reliable unit until it is exposed to excess engine heat then the rectifier pukes. There are companies that make a CS130 clone that supposedly can handle the heat and would be a whole lot cheaper than changing it over. If anyone has a picture of the Delco Alt. on a 348 I can identify it and find a replacement if you want.

There is a lot of good electrical information on this site:

http://forum.sounddomain.com/

It's related to people who want to put high power stereos in their cars but your situation should be the same problem.

From what I've seen, you can rebuild an alternator to handle more power than oem.

There are lots of car audio buffs who do just that, have a 60-70AMP alternator rebuilt to handle 100-110AMP's...

If you do a search on alternator rebuilding + car audio you may be able to find some info..

I'm learning to rebuild alternators in my electrical class at the community college, but you shouldn't trust me. I had extra parts laying around after I took my first one apart and put it back together.

I can rebuild any Delco alternator but if the car is designed for more current than the thing can put out then it will kill it in short order. Having said that, and since they have had so much trouble then shouldn't they fix it free, or if not maybe if there is a lawyer among us??????

William,

Do not bother wasting your money or time rebuilding the original equipment alternator. I have a '91 348ts and have been all through the scenario you are describing.

Buy the Nipo alternator. It was designed to handle the load needs of the 348. Ferrari of Los Gatos rebuilt mine for free to tie me over until they could get a Nipo ( waited 3 weeks). The rebuilt one died in two weeks.

The original equipment GM alternators are too light for for load required by the 348. That is why Ferrari wants you to upgrade.

4K miles and it died on you?

I just had my 90 TR alternator rebuilt and also upgraded output by a local shop. Costed about 200 bucks. Much cheaper than replacing it.

I remember reading elsewhere here that the 348 had an inadequate alternator and dealers would replace it for a larger/heavier unit that was able to withstand the load. I can't remember which brand of alt failed and which replaced it, as well as the years of production that had the smaller alt.

Dr. Elder,

Look for an alternator rebuilding shop in your yellow pages.

Your alternator should be easily rebuilt for under $150.

From what I remember, there were some list members who have had theirs rebuilt and had no problems.

I've had a porsche alternator rebuilt $120. ($1k for a new one) and it came out perfect.

Best Regards,

Michael

My alternator died. Before I go out and spend $2K on a Nipo alternator, perhaps the one I have can be rebuilt.

The car only has 4K miles on it......

Any suggestions ?
