Geof,
On the 328, versus the other 2-valve Ferraris which have larger diameter valve buckets, I found that the tools as used on a Yahama motorcyle work well...with very slight modification. The valve depressing tool is PN 57001-1153. I used a grinder to slightly modify (thin) the wedge area of this tool. The bucket retainer tool is from Yamaha, as well..but no PN on it. Can remember what I paid for them...but not more than $30, for both. In the picture before, the top two tools work well for the 4-valve cars...and the lower bucket retaining tool is for a 2-valve car. I made that from an old windshield wiper arm.

Regards,

For what it's worth, a Fiat SOHC (i.e. X1/9 or 128) tool will work to hold down the buckets on a dino engine - don't know if the V8 engine has the same requirements. I used what used to be a screwdriver to press down the shims and the put the tool in to hold the bucket while removing shims. I was at a friend's shop and he had a handful of the tools to choose from and some were too wide though. I remember the official Fiat one did not work but an aftermarket one did.

I tried the piston ring trick first but the ring I had wasn't thick enough to hold the bucket down far enough. Next time i will make a custom piece of metal.

You need two pieces,

1. A hook to depress the valve spring, this is doable with almost anything from a bent screw driver to a small prybar in a pry bar set (I paid $15 for a set of 4 for mine).

2. A small piece of metal to insert in between the shim bucket and the camshaft to keep it depressed while you pick out the valve shim. This I made from a piece of steel, roughly cut into a small hook (like a question mark) about 1/4 thick, filed with a disc-sander and finished with a handle so that it can be gripped under oily environment. Otherwise, I heard that a big washer cut into a moon shape will also do.

You need to have access to a bench-grinder, or dremmel tool, or ... whatever it is that you can get to cut metal with.

What is available out there for valve shim removal for a 328? I'm trying to avoid big bucks for a Ferrari tool. I've heard that a $20 Fiat tool, appropriately ground to make it narrower, can be successfully used. If so, what are the specifics for the tool, and where can it be obtained? Or, what other options are available? Thanks.
