Sam,
Much easier to do if you remove the seats first. They're actually quite easy to remove - four allen head screws - one at each end of the rails. I suppose you could do it with the seats still in, but definitely will be harder. First remove the two shift gate screws and then the two small screws at the bottom of the ashtray (pop up the inner tray to see them). Next, remove the two a/c knobs (allen screws) and the rings holding the four switches (the black knobs just pop off - except for the antenna switch - which screws off.) At this point up can lift up the top center plate by wiggling it forward and reach in to unplug the lighter and unscrew the base which is spring loaded. You should now be able to lift up the top center plate enough to unscrew each of the four slide controls at the back of the console. Unscrew the cable ends first then you can lift up the center plate enough to unscrew each of the four controls. (Be sure to tag each cable and control 1,2,3,4 so you know which way they go back together). This will allow you to remove the top center plate completely. Just let the cable ends and the switches lye in the center.
At this point remove the screws at the base of the console (about 8 of them) and lift up the console enough to unscrew the three bolts holding down the E brake handle. (best if E brake is pulled all the way back first). Once the handle is loose, you can then remove the console with a little wiggling around. Once off, you can do what you want. I re-dyed mine, bought new switch plates and cleaned up the slide controls. Feel free to call me if you need further help. 425-466-2886. Hope this helps!

Hey Stu,

What was the procedure for removing the center console on the 308 QV?

Lens,
No, not difficult at all.
You will need to take the top off the center console to get to the a/c switch.
Unscrew the gear shift gate (2 screws).
Then two screws at the bottom of the ashtray next to the gear shift (take the insert out first).
Carefully pry out the rear row of switches, not the frames around the switches, and remove the two screws underneath. These two are sometimes missing.

Glad I was helpful for a few.
Sam - the kinked hood had to be taken to a body shop. I went to 4 different shops before I found one that would work with aluminum. Most won't touch it - even the "high-end" shops. Guess it's especially difficult to work with. I bought the targa latches from Maranello Auto Parts (800-233-7820). I replaced them mostly for cosmetic reasons - the two leather pulls were worn and broken. It was the new rubber seals that cured the noisy top (lot's of creaking). With the new rubber the top fits very snug and is nice and quiet.
John - There's a great list or resources for just about everything in this months FORZA magazine - towards the back. All the parts houses I used are listed except for www.italiancarparts.com, which is also a very helpful source. The only shop I used was to do the repair noted above, which is here in the Seattle area.
Len - Sorry, I'm not familiar with the 328 console, but the a/c switch on my 308 was easy to replace once I removed the center console - which was actually kind of difficult. Once removed, however, most all the switches are easily changed.

FYI - next weekend's project - clean and lube the power window tracts. I hear it really remedies the "slow-as-slugs" window problem.

An 86 328 GTB that Im considering needs a new A/C fan switch. I think it needs to be accessed from underneath the center console. Is this a difficult fix?

Thanks,

Len

Stu,
I am thinking of purchasing an 85 308 chassis for a project car. Great list of ideas/repairs. Can you list all of the resources you utilized to acquire all of the parts and any shops you worked with .

Thanks,
John.

Thanks Stu, you sure hit many of the 308's weak points. Curious..how did you do # 8, repair the kinked hood -- body shop?

Also, #6 - where and how much on those latches and did it make for a rattle free ride?

Just thought it might be helpful for the less-experienced (like me!) 308 owners who might be considering a few minor repairs and improvements, if I noted the recent repairs I've done myself on my '85 QV. I did a fair amount of research and feel I found parts at reasonable prices, so if anyone is considering taking on any of these improvements and would like to discuss first, please feel free to contact me. I did most of this myself and if I can do it - I know you can!

1)repaired worn leather seat panels and re-dyed seats, door panels and center console & replaced worn switches and switch plates on console
2)replaced both door(s) and targa top rubber weather striping
3)replaced speedometer
4)upgraded gauge lighting for better night driving
5)replaced steering wheel with more modern MOMO
and adjusted wheel position
6)replaced targa latches
7)replaced power mirror switch
8)replaced engine hood struts and rebuilt front hood strut and had front hood repaired (previous owner kinked hood - forgot to push button on strut!)
9)replaced front bumper and lens' (crack in fiberglass)- this required removal of headlights as well, which was a good opportunity to clean and lube them.

I did a few other minor interior cosmetic repairs and improvements (like carpet replacement, seat rail repairs, etc.) so along with a 30k major and a professional buff and wax, she's ready for summer!
