I think that the importance of this is being overblown because a little oil one way or the other will not make any difference. I add the proper amount during an oil change and only check my level before starting the car cold plus you don't burn your freakin hand. It is usually a little over full at that time and gives you a standard reference point each time with all drainback complete. If you check it immediately after shut down you should get a different reading than after 2 minutes or 10 minutes or an hour. As long as it is around the full mark cold or a little low after running you are safe. Don't loose any sleep over this as your car holds two gallons of oil and you could probably do just fine on half that. |

I recall somewhere in my 308 owners manual that oil should be checked asap after shutdown and with oil temp of around 160 degrees. I assume the intention was that the filter is full and, if there is an oil cooler bypass (is there?) that this has opened to allow flow through the system. Philip |

No such thing as a dumb question on a Ferrari. If there was, I would be the king of dumb questions. However, I would rather ask a question, however dumb to someone else, and keep my car running in top condition! Keep asking, I learn something every day from other folks posts! Thanks. |

Right, Dave, within two minutes of shutdown and with the oil at running temperature. |

Folks, I know what the owners manual says about checking the oil in my 1986 328GTS, but I wanted to find out what you all have found is TRULY the best, most accurate way to do this. Anyone? Thanks in advance! |
