The headers are packed with it inside the heat shields and it deteriorates with age and vibration as the shields loosen due to heat cycles.

I had a mysterious pile of white powder underneath my car every time I worked on it in the garage. I thought at first it was aluminum dust or some other material caused by a pulley or something rubbing. I had never seen this before I did the timing gear bearing repair. I think I figured out what it is and was wondering if any of you had had a similar problem. I inspected the engine side at length and could not find anything until I noticed some similar material where the aluminum heat shield buts up to the exhaust flange. I think it is asbestos or something, which has deteriorated due to heat or time and is slowly falling out right at this opening. I looked at it under a magnifying glass and sure enough it looks like some kind of fibers. I always push the car out of the garage before I start it and my drive way is concrete so it may have been happening for years and I just havent noticed it. Have any of you removed these heats shields and found any of the material in a powdered form like this?

Any comments appreciated!

Rob
