I've used a WaterPic. The spray can be directed where you want it; the volume is low; and theres enough force to move the greasy dirt. The caution is that little particles will bounce back; so wear old clothes, cover your face and hair, and cover nearby body panels. --Tim

A long time ago, I cleaned my 944 engine at the carwash and it was not good. Somehow, the water dripped through the sparkplug holes or distributor, and made the car felt like it was running on 2 cynlinders. If I was to spray it again, I would defintely cover up critical areas of the engine!

There is a large hole in the upper part of the transfer case/bellhousing on a 328 for example, that could allow bad stuff to get onto the clutch. This is the one to pack with rags when you change the oil. I would be afraid to get any kind of degreaser/oil/water into this area. I would also be worried about the distributors and electrical system. I agree with stu --- by hand!

By hand, my friend, by hand! That's the only way I'll clean mine. Too much risk with high pressure water. You can still use degresser, but spray it on a little at a time and clean it as you go. A little rubber cleaner in the right places after cleaning is nice too! Good luck!

I don't know if this works, but one of my friends that runs a auto shop says that using a manual car wash with both the tire degresser and water spray is the fastest and best. He doesn't cover anything up and just sprays the engine down with the tire degresser and then switches to water. He says to run the car at speed for awhile to let the air and heat evaporate and dry the engine.

Last note, he works on $10,000 cars, not $100,000 cars, do you think this is safe for a Ferrari? The major risk I think is the electronics.

Hi guys,

Any tips on how to spruce up the looks of my engine? Especially on what to avoid doing and good cleaning products to use.

Thanks
