Okay, after reading my post, I sound more confusing than explaining, sorry.

When you look into your 308/328 engine bay, the forward bank of cylinders is "Sinistra", the rear bank (towards the trunk) is "Destra". Hope that clears it up.

FYI folks: I should've said this before when I first started posting my rebuild messages. I refer to the proper italian names as indicated in the manuals. The engine is named oriented with the crank nose facing front (no, not the front of the car, but the front of the crank) and sides named in relation to this. This is true of any engine. Take a look at your manuals and you'll see what I mean.

Herbert, when I was cleaning the heads, I didn't pay attention if this cylinder had excessive build-up of carbon. All the ports show alot of carbon, so I'll take your word for it.

Left and right is seen from the rear of the engine.
Rear is where the clutch is - front is where the belts are.

Sinistra and destra are left and right. I am pretty sure that it is from when you look at the engine from the side where the timing belts are.

Now I forget, I know sinistra and destra are front and back but which is which?

As for your valve problem, would improper installation during engine building cause it?

Cheers

Could have been that the valve was not hardened properly or a carbon buildup holding the valve open slightly. Those old Vespa unibody cars used to have the same problem. I used to have to take my walking cane and force the valves out of the heads on those cars.

I worked on cleaning the valves on the sinistra-side cylinder head and noticed the exhaust valve for #8 cylinder is tweaked... I mean TWEAKED. Huge gap between the seat and the valve, groove on the valve head seat-surface on that side. Piston #8 has a mark where the valve struck the cut-out (not major damage). Why just the one valve? Every other seats flat and true. Excessive valve float? Impossible with double-springs. No, the belt didn't slip a tooth, because the cams lined up when I pulled the covers off. I know I have to replace, I'm just curious to know why this happened.

I haven't yet looked at the destra head.
