You better rod out the radiator anyway. I have seen sooo many of these 308's with junked up radiators on the inside, mine included. It took me two rod jobs to get the temps back down. One post a while back mentioned that when he took his in he was told that they couldn't believe it came out of a car that was actually running. Just a bit of advice from someone who has been there.

Ken -- Certainly try the bleeding first, as the others have suggested, but do both places -- radiator and thermostat housing.

I have had alot of heating problems also. Of course I live in Florida.
What I have noticed looking at my radiator is that the fins are too close together. Normaly this good for more cooling, but the ferrari fins are so close even my aftermarket 1400cfm fans cant get enough air to flow through it to cool. I would guess the ferrari radiator would be fine at speeds of 130mph where the airpressure is high enough to make it through the small fins. I found a nice aluminum radiator for about 425$, I will probably buy it and try it out.

Nature of the beast. You probably don't want to operate at the far-right end of the gage for long. I live in OK and the temperature gage in my 82 European GTSi would take off if the outside temp was over 90 (a certainty July-Sept) and I drove in town for any length of time. I pulled the thermostat and radiator switch and went to NAPA. They have a generic listing of both of those devices with operating temperatures. You can purchase (might have to order) lower-operating-temperature versions that will fit and operate correctly, just at the lower temp. This should correct your problem in summertime NJ. The only down side is when the outside air temp returns to pleasant and below, the engine and transmission will never reach ideal operating temperature (mid-gage), so you will have to switch back to the standard thermostat and radiator switch.

Plan B: have someone make you a deeper radiator. A friend with an 83 Mondial, in OKC, had the same overheating tendency and had Bob Smith in Gainsville, TX make a new radiator which cured the problem. Downside: cost (my friend wouldn't divulge the price he paid, but said it was impressive).

In any case, make sure the cooling system is clean, the pump is good and belt tight. Red Line Water Wetter (not totally sure of the name) may help some.

I would try to get your temp a little lower. A little over half is fine on a hot day with the a/c on but I wouldn't want it much higher. When was the last time the rad. was rodded out or recored? I use 50/50 Prestone and Hayden fans. On my QV I have the stock fans and it still runs cool. Normally if you have air in it, the temp will rise fast them drop. You can bleed it easily. Get the car up to temp and loosen the bleed screw just slightly though as the coolant will be under high pressure. Loosen it and watch until a small steady stream comes out. If it gets worse it could be a possible sticking thermostat but it doesn't sound like it from your description. HTHs.

During the past month NJ has been experiencing a heat wave. Temps have been 95+ for the most part. For the past week I have noticed that my oil temp has been at around 235 (second to last reading on the gauge) and my water has been at the same, 235 (second to last reading on the gauge). Even while driving on the highway the temp will not go down. Is this too hot for a 308 QV? When I put the heater on (not a nice thing on a 100 degree day) the oil went down to 210 and the water went down to 195 which is what I believe the normal temps to be. What is the story here? Could I have some air in the cooling system or could the anti-freeze ratio be off? TIA.
