Any comments from 348 owners on disconnecting the defective thermocouple ECU to eliminate the slow down 1-4 alarm .

I had a similar problem and it was impossible to track down...I found out it was a loose wire inside a connector to the ECU. The way I discovered it was I was looking and looking and testing etc.and I walked away and the weak engine lid struts gave way and the top slammed shut (luckily not on my head) and then the bank lost power...had to be a loose wire.....I got lucky, this was a tough one to diagnose. On the 348's and later cars they electronics run everything and you can't rule out anything easily.

The ECU swap out will tend fix most false 'Slow Down/Check 1-4/5-8' false readings on 348's. The ECU's are supposed to be a sealed weatherproof units but are situated just under the slats on the engine cover.

Rain and moisture plays havoc with them and in true ferrari style cause all sorts of strange things to happen. The warning lights are supposed to blink to warn of an increase in temperature of the exhaust gases and then stay on when another pre-defined temperature has been reached (and of course shutting down one or both banks).

I found that sometimes the car would run fine (both banks) for a period of time (with the light on) then suddenly decide to shut down one half. You'll know when this happens as you'll start to be overtaken by cyclists!

Hi guys,

after swapping out the exhaust ECU
and the O2 sensors (these seem to wear
out after a while) I have not seen
any more slowdown/check engine lights
on my 348. Try it, it's relatively
inexpensive (125$/O2 sensor at the autopart store)

I have a 94 348 Spider, and I am also having a similar
problem with the slow down 1-4 light coming on for split seconds , and then the car looses power. The RPM drops from 1000 to 850-900 in idle. If I restart the car , the problem disappears.

I was wondering if the loss of power is also due to the slow down light coming on.

Thanks,

Like Marc's 348, my 348 ts also displayed (or sometimes still displays) the "Slow, Check engine 5-8 or 1-4" Lights. This is caused by moisture in the ECU controller for the O2 sensor and other sundry electronics associated with engine cylinder bank 1 through 4 or 5 through 8. There are two independent sealed units, one per cylinder bank. A fresh unit fixes the problem, and sometimes just warming the car will evaporate enough moisture to make it read properly. To replace the unit, it only costs about $75 (I think I remember correctly) It is a simple plug-in under the hood.

The lights on my 328 played havoc as well. What I eventually found was that quite a few of the soldering on the rear of the fuse panel had broken loose or melted. Rectifying it was just simply resoldering every single one of the connections... should last another 10 years. Cost me $25. Be careful when soldering though, If unsure the panel comes off easily and then get a qualified person to do the soldering for you.

Just remember that temp gauges are relative instruments and can be very inaccurate. Try the procedure I said below and if it does not work, try again with a temp 10 degrees higher. What you might need to find is the relative "sweet spot" on your gauge that says -- you can go for max rpm now!!.

Hope it works for you.

Different car but similar symptom. I used to get the this light (exhaust over temp) when I first got my TR. After three times of this, I changed my warm up procedure. I now warm up at least 10 minutes before exceeding 4000 rpms. The key for my car is not to exceed 400 rpms until a temp of 175 is reached. Every since I have done that -- I have never seen that light again.

The low power thing -- well talk to Steve M about that -- they may not be related and you have two different problems.

I suggest you warm up the car (by warm up I mean driving also) but keep track of your oil temp and do not exceed 60% of max rpms (if your redline is 7000 -- then max 4000 or so) until a temp of 170 or higher -- see if that helps.

Good luck.

Thanks Steve,
348 tb series special 1993
the car runs great, but sometimes when i get on it the 5-8 yellow ck engine light will come on and than go off when I slow down, same with the go slow light on the same side. Its seems to happen when I let the car warm up for 3-6 minutes before I drive it, also sometime it bogs down like its getting to much or not enough fuel. Could it be choke related? When I turn off key and restart during any of the problems the lights stay off and cars seems fine, maybe my starting proceedure, its my first Ferrari.

Give a little more detail -- model/year/version, what "engine lights"? (a generic "check engine" light?), is the "go slow" light the exhaust over-temp warning light, etc..
