thanks for all the help guys... i'll try to find the silver cap tomorrow Heath... Problem is that I have a parts catalog for my car and a shop manual for a quattrovalvole from '81 (mine's actually only a 2-valve, though, so there are some differences)... I really should track down an owner's manual... Lee, I'll try to add brake fluid tomorrow as well... What's the best fluid to use, by the way? I took my car to Lake Forest a couple of times and after 2 separate bills of about $2300 a piece for some odds & ends, I decided to try & find someone else in Chicago... I'll definitely let you know if I find anything. Got a couple leads from friends, but don't know about how good the work is yet. |

Sam, My brake failure light was coming on in my 87 Mondial and I just topped off the fluid and it went away. The sensor is sensitive, so even if it just below the line filler up. Also the pad replacement is pretty straight forward. All you really need are some metric allen wrenches and some pliers to remove the spring. If you have a C clamp, use it to compress the caliper before putting it all back together. It makes reassembly a little easier. I'm also in the Chicago area and if you find a good mechanic let me know. I took my car to Continental for its 30k and all I can say is ouch. Hope this helps. Lee |

SAM IN MY 84 MONDIAL OWNERS BOOK IT IS ON PAGE 28. BUT THE MILAGE SINSOR IS LOCATED ON THE RIGHT SIDE MIDDLE OF THE BOX. IT SHOULD BE NEXT TO YOUR A/C DRYER.IT SHOULD BE A SILVER CAP YOU UNSCREW IT TO GET TO THE SENSOR RESET HOLE. SORRY I FORGOT TO MENTION THE SILVER CAP. HOPE THIS CLEARS IT UP FOR YOU. BEST REGARDS, HEATH |

Oh... and does anyone know of a good mechanic in Chicago? I've heard Todd Routi is good at Continental, but quite frankly, I'm sick of paying the roughly $100 / hr charge for labor alone... any other good mechanics here that aren't at Lake Forest or Continental? Thanks! |

Hi all... My "service due" light is still on... checked what a few of you said re: how to turn it off, but couldn't find the damned screw! Now my "brake failure" light comes on when I hit the brakes... I'll check the fluid & if that doesn't work, I'll see about the pads... The A/C compressor is starting to really sound bad... I think the bearings are going. I've heard rumors re: a York compressor to replace it. Does anyone know how much it costs, as well as how much to install it & get your a/c working again -- including maintaining your freon (or whatever they're using these days) charge? Related to that, when I press the button to switch from Vent to Defrost, the air still flows through the front vents & doesn't change to go through the vents for the windshield. Any thoughts? Thanks everyone... love reading all the tips... and despite the problems, I LOVE my damned car!!! |
