Matt No. That is George Stauffer's car J4. It was the first one that was raced and it won Sebring. My car is one of the 4 LeMans MK-IV's:J6. These differ slightly from J4. The sills are squared off and the tail hindges to the rear. Mine was prepared by Shelby as was the winner J5. The other two J7&J8 were prepared by Holman&Moody. My car was driven to fourth overall reaching 223MPH on the Mulsanne and turning a 3:22 lap by Bruce McLaren. His co driver was Mark Donohue. Best Jim |

James, awesome cars. And even better that you drive them and enjoy them. The GT40 has to be my ultimate favorite. |

I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Holman in late October at Brian Redman's Targa 66 event at Roebling Road raceway in Savannah, GA. I was about 4 car lengths behind him (he in his GT40 replica, and me in my friend's McLaren Can-Am car) when he went off road backwards in the final turn & slid backwards across 200' of grass into a tree. Moderate damage to the rear of his car, but none to him thankfully. VERY nice & gracious man. He also brought some sort of Ferrari roadster he rebuilt...but didn't take it on track, unfortunately!! |

Love it. There's a transducer on the steering colume that reads the key as an anti theft measure. A wire to it was loose. J5/J6 has been straightened out in the most recent GT40 books. Lee Holman recently got me a copy of the original race entry documents from LeMans which list the engine serial and chassis #'s and confirm what I figured out. |

I understand. So, basically Ronnie Spain's book is wrong. I'm going to print out this thread and put it in my copy for future reference. Did you ever find out why your Maserati wouldn't start? How do you like it so far? |

My car is J6. At the time Ronnie and others thought J5 was J6 but recently the Henry Ford Museam and I sorted that out. J6 was given to AJ Foyt,(Who claimed it was the winner which it wasn't) sold to Les Lindley who crashed as reported but didn't damage the tub, sold to Peter Lavonos who vintage raced it, (Driven by Bob Bondurant and Sterling Moss) (Moss blew the gear box which Lavonos repaired) Completely gone through by John Collins (The original Shelby Crew Chief),sold to me and restored to it's proper colors by WWOC. |

James: According to Ronnie Spain's book J-5 had a nasty crash at Monterey in 1981. This is your car, isn't it? How nasty was it and what needed to be replaced? |

James I know everyone else is complimenting them, but I have to say I think you have the coolest combination of cars ever. I always thought a Cobra to park next to the 308 would be cool, kind of a Ferrari vs Ford thing, you truly have got it though. Very cool. |

Not in anger. I do drive it up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed untimed. It's like your kids you love them equally. You really do.

Ford spent 12 million dollars to build 3 Prototypes and 5 MK-IV's. The MK-IV is the only car made in America to have won the 24 hours of LeMans. The MK-IV is the only GT40 who's chassis plate reads: "Manufactured By The Ford Motor CO. in Dearborn,Mich. USA" The MK-IV is "The Ford that beat Ferrari" The pace it set 35 years ago would be, albeit in a different class, fast enough to qualify at LeMans today. My MK-IV is the only MK-IV that finished the 67 race that still runs. Unlike it's sister car which finished first and is in the Henry Ford museam, it still has it's original engine, gearbox, and chassis plate. It is a totally no stories car. How many other's of this stature do I own? None... |

It is. They maintain my cars. That pic was taken on their may tech day 2 years ago. The F cars in the pic aren't mine. They are doing the restoration on my P4. |
