The only two times I came close to Dave was once in 1995 NAMM show and 1996 when I was studying at Drummers Collective. He gave a master class. BTW guys I am a drummer from Singapore been playing for a while. Anyone from the Bay Area should take a few lessons from David Garibaldi...his Oakland stuff is pretty happening. |

Now I take from rob again. Dave was a nice guy, he was nice to me. I cant argue with you, however I do have some pictures that I can dig out if you really need them! Regards, Brian |

I'm surprised that Rob Garven hasn't piped up. He was professional rock-n-roll drummer for many years. He has a web site of his exploits somewhere...... |

Thanks Jerry and Todd for the tips -- I'll give the pillow trick a try, and experiment. Years back, I purchased some foam muffle rings from REMO that came with plastic tray inserts, but they muffled the sound too much -- almost to the point of a "thud". Think I'll also try out different types of heads to get the right mix. Greg...great picture! Looks like Tommy is a pretty cool kind of guy. Is he into exotic cars as well? |

Eric, I know exactly what you mean with the ringing...Way back when, I put a piece of cloth with duct tape on the upper right hand corner of the heads. The inside head on the bass drum is a pinstripe, the 8" is a Tama solid black head and the rest are Tama black dots. All the outer skins are the original Tama white dots...the kit is pewter (Silver)...bought it 1982. Jerry is on the $ with regards to both cymbals and heads. ...I still get nausea wondering if I gave it 110% years ago what would have happened. Cheers all TTG |

Eric, take off your rear bass head and insert a pillow that lays half on the floor of the bass and half against the inside of the front head. Problem solved. |

Hopefully this pic will come up. This is a picture of Tommy and myself. He is playing my guitar. I guess playing with EJ for so long how could you not pick up something on the guitar.

Todd...sounds like you're in the same boat as I...drumming has pretty much turned into just a hobby these days for me...just don't have the time between family, work, etc. -- but I'll always own a set of drums! Noticed that you play TAMA's -- have you done any special muffling / head combinations on your kit, or just stock? Reason I ask is that mine is still stock, but the heads (esp. the bass drum) have a little to much "ring" for my taste. Jerry mentioned pinstripe heads -- perhaps that would be a good first step. Other than that it's a wonderful kit -- especially the color -- same color as my 308QV ! |

Yes, Greg...I've heard of Tommy Taylor -- never had the opportunity to meet him personally though. Wow, that's great to hear that you've had the opportunity to session with him. You guys have all the luck! I do have a couple of Eric Johnson's albums, and listen to them often -- great stuff! My personal favorite is Ah Via Musicom (featuring Tommy on drums).

I agree DW definitely makes a very high quality kit with an excellent sound. They just don't have the name recognition yet like some of the others, but they are definitely catching on. |

I am lead guitar player and I know what you mean. I really enjoy playing out but in Chattanooga, TN there isn't much of a music scene. Plus, it is very difficult to find anyone who takes their instrument seriously. Most just want to come over and jam. One of my favorite sounding kits that the drummer I play with used was a DW kit. He went through many kits. Have any of you guys heard of Tommy Taylor, drummer for Eric Johnson? Charlie Adams? Anyway, I thought I would share. |

Sheryl The Drummer, You have an excellent cymbal collection. The K's are a very high quality cymbal played by Dave Weckl, Peter Erskine, Elvin Jones, Dennis Chambers, Steve Gadd and many others. They have a darker and warmer sound than the "A Customs" that I use which are more fast and shimmering. As far as heads, I use the Remo Ambassadors because of their higher tones and fuller resonance but if you want more of a dull thud, then get pinstripes as they are a double layered head that is almost indestructible. Have fun! Jerry. |

I'm Bob's wife, Sheryl, the drummer. He gave me the Pearl drumkit and lessons as an anniversary gift (the following year he gave me a BMW Z-3 roadster in Atlantic Blue - THIS is a man that knows how to shop!) Jerry: I have the Pearl Exports with new Aquarian heads that made a BIG difference in the sound. The snare has a Remo Weather King coated pinstripe - I like my snare a LOT. Do you have any recommendation for the new heads for the Yamaha kit? It had Remo Weather King coated pinstripes - the snare had clear RWK pinstripe heads. My cymbals are all Zildjian, mostly K Customs - dark K custom hi-hats, 20" K custom dark, dry ride, 17" dark K custom crash medium thin, Avedis Zildjian extra thin splash, and an Avedis Zildjian16-inch china high. I also have the 12" table Zildjian gong - another anniversary present. My thought is to have both kits to play around with (I'm a recreational drummer) I'm envious of your 25 year career!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have recently been to clinics with ZORO, The Funky Drummer, Steve Smith's Vital Information, and Greg Bisonette. ZORO's 10 commandments of Funk Drummer is OUTSTANDING. I knew Jeff Porcaro MANY a year ago. Bruce I KNOW WHO DAVE WECKL IS!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Everybody in drumming knows who he is! Tell me he was a big nerd - or anything that would make the rest of us feel better about NOT being great drummers like he is. : ) You guys ROCK and drive Ferrari's - life is SO good in America! Nice to meet you both. |

Bruce...that's incredible...Dave Weckl for a roommate for 3 years!! I'd be honored just to meet the guy and talk "shop". Yes, most drummers (including myself) would consider him to be one of the few greats! His talent, skill, and technique leaves me in awe every time I play one of his albums -- definitely very inspirational. Bob...I completely agree with Jerry's comments regarding both the Yamaha and Pearl Export kits. A drummer friend of mine had about a 15 or 20 year old Yamaha kit that he played the death out of...and it sounded great! The drums had a very warm "broke-in" tone to them. Cymbals, hardware, heads, etc. can all be purchased seperately and upgraded as desired from many different drum / hardware manufacturers to suit a particular drummer's taste. The sky is the limit as to how customized your drum "palette" can be. Depending on the condition of the Yamaha drums themselves, I'd say keep them and spend the $$$$ on upgraded hardware, heads, and various sizes and tones of cymbals. Believe it or not, my first kit was a REMO Pretuned Series basic 5-piece (anyone remember those? ). Over the years, I added all sorts of cymbals, roto-toms, timbales, Simmons & Tama electronic drums, etc. to suit my taste. Played that kit roughly 20 years before finally selling it all about 3 years ago -- but only to buy the kit I have now -- a TAMA Rockstar with all the bells and whistles. Speaking of drums...been seriously thinking about getting back into the electronic percussion again. Thinking about getting the new Roland V-Club just for kicks -- don't have enough room for the larger V-Concert or V-session. Any thoughts or experiences with them? I know my wife and neighbors would absolutely LOVE them, especially if I use the headphones! |

Bob, I have been a drummer for 25 years and have owned many kits. My current kit is a 10 piece Pearl Professional DX series with 10, 12, 13, 14, and 15" hanging toms, 16 & 18" floor toms, a 14" deep snare and 22" double bass drums. My cymbals consist of Paiste 14" sound edge high hats, a Sabian 20" China, a Sabian 10" splash, a 15" and 17" Zildjian "A custom" crash (I love these), and a 2nd set of 14" Zildjian high hats on my right that I just let lie loosely together (no foot pedal action). I have had the pleasure to study under Mr. Tim Froncek who used to drum for Woody Herman (if you are into Jazz). This guy absolutely SMOKES!!! A good friend of mine also owns a drum shop in town so I have been around drums quite a bit. Anyway to answer your question, yes these drums are worth putting heads on as heads are relatively cheap. I am not familiar with a Yamaha kit having mahogany with the Beech liner. This combination is not currently in their line up to my knowledge. They do make birch, beech and maple shells that are cut in plies and positioned with staggered diagonal seams to achieve a uniform thickness. Maple shells have a soft, full tone, birch shells have a hard sharp tone and beech is in the middle. Consequently, that kit of yours has a good "all purpose" tone to it and I'm sure you'll like it. Yamaha's hardware however does not impress me so if any of it needs replacing, look to Pearl's B-855W series or a rack. The Pearl Exports are entry level drums that I would not recommend. Please let me know how else I can help you. Jerry |

My wifes hobby is drums, she was just given a mid 80s Yamaha kit 8,10,12,13 hanging toms, 16 floor tom 22 bass and snare and all hardware. New heads are needed, no cymbals, construction is mahogany with beech liner, plastic wrapped. Her teacher when asked said Yamaha never made a bad drum, he does want to sell her heads / other pcs for this kit. Her current kit is a Pearl Export. The question is are these worth putting money in, or just donate to someone? Thanks |
