I went to the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals last weekend and they run a Semi with 3 jet engines on the back. 35,000 HP and 1/4 mile speed is just over 300 MPH. The year before I watched it run at night and it looks like the space shuttle going down the track.

I have a video of a jet powered car on my computer. It doesn't crash or anything, just pulls off a small street and onto a larger one. Cool nevertheless.

Tells about the jet/rocket car thing. Funny how this story keeps perpetuating, and every couple years someone sends me email saying it just happened and it's true!!!

DES, the story is bogus. It supposedly happened in Arizona, and if you ever call the Arizona Highway Patrol for verification, get ready for a nasty reply. They have been called a million times about this urban legend. HOWEVER, it is quite possibly based on another story. I ran across a guy's website in which he stated that he was the source of the Arizona Rocket Car urban legend. He said that his dad was an army surplus dealer for years in Arizona, and that he had installed a surplus JATO rocket unit in a 1959 Chevy Impala. The car was welded to a small mining ore car like the kind that is used to haul up ore on a small track from a mine. But it was "launched" down an abandoned mining car rail track that led into a mine shaft. There was no driver. It jumped the rail on the curve at the end of the track and imbeded itself into the side of the mountain. Or so the guy says.

I have a hard time beleiving that a regular car body would go the speed of sound. it took that british team years and millions of $ to do it and a guy did it with some old stuff?

i read an article somewhere, a while ago about a guy out west who found some military jet fuel propulsion thingie and somehow affixed it to his car (a cutlass or something like that) and he got on the highway and, upon coming to a straightaway, turned this puppy on...
He went so fast, so quick, he had no time to avoid death... Once he realized he was going too fast, he slammed on the brakes, which immediately melted...
When the road finally turned, he kept going straight (because his car was airborne at that time) and he continued in motion until he crashed into a hill... When authorities first arrived on the scene (i guess some cop just happened on this crater in the side of the hill) he had no idea what he was looking at (he didn't know he was looking at a melted, crashed vehicle)...

Forensic scientists slowly put together what happened... one of their clues was some teeth they found in what was a melted pile of what used to be a steering wheel... they said he acheived mach 1 at the height of his final moments of life...

So... who's up for modifying their car tomorrow...?
