Jeff, great guidelines, thank you... i've taken all of your suggestions into consideration, however, i need to cancel some of them out...

My hair is really short, so by default, it's always neat.
i consider myself to be fairly articulate and when it comes to things of a nature where what i'm saying is the main focus, i try my best to make sure that i'm clearly understood.
The work environment thing i need to nix- i haven't told my boss about this 'cause he'll defecate a cinder block if i tell him i might need 6 weeks off... (he might tell me not to come back... i haven't rally come up with a contingency plan if he tells me that...)
One of my ideas involved having a friend of mine interacting with me, during the video- she'd be sort of like a crutch as i am to show who i truly am in the video and she would be, for lack of a better term, my "co-host"... We would dialogue and certain things about me would be mentioned...
i already considered the possibility of driving in the video, and as you said, thought it unwise to film myself doing something foolish... driving really is part of who i truly am, so i haven't completely ruled out everything car-related... i'll definitely "steer" clear of any shananigans, though...
i'd like to show my appreciation for this opportunity, however i don't want to come across cheesy where it might be misconstrued that i'm not being sincere... Any thoughts on how i might incorporate my appreciation without it seeming fraudulent would be, well... appreciated! :-)
Also, i've considered the possibility of mentioning famous drivers or something to that effect, however, i DO believe this is for amateurs only and i'd hate to be misconceived as experienced in any way... i've already ruled out associating myself with my uncle's BMW, in any way... my car will do just fine if i decide to shoot myself in the cabin, or by it's side... it's not sporty and bears no indication that, inside me, writhes a living, breathing racecar driver, itching to break out and be reckoned with...

Thank you for your response, i really do appreciate it... any additional thoughts or comments are definitely and always welcome... i will most certainly keep you posted...

i wish your step son the best of luck- any fellow racing enthusiast is cool to me and i'm sorry he had to drop out (although, that DOES increase my odds :-))... Thanks again.

DES:

I asked my stepson about his experience with this. He says he applied for it and got beyond the first round, but decided not to pursue it as he was trying for an internship at the State Capital.

So, my ideas for your video, for what it's worth:

1) If this is for TV, make sure you look as good as possible. Well dressed, neat hair, etc.
2) Speak clearly! You would not believe how annoying it is to old timers like me when young people "mumble" or talk so "cool" we can't relate.
3) Show yourself in a working environment, being serious, and in "play mode", having fun. Give the impression of having a well-rounded personality.
4) Show yourself interacting with others. If there are 12 contestants, they want someone who isn't a "lone wolf".
5)Under no circumstances should you show yourself driving irresponsibly. You will be operating someone else's expensive car, and they don't want to see a "yahoo".
6) Be appreciative and polite: "Thank you for this great opportunity to realize a dream".
7) You might want to drop some names of famous rally drivers, to appear knowledgeable. "I am really impressed with the skill of drivers like Marcus Gronholm and Colin Macrae."

What do you think?

Good luck, keep us posted!

LOL, Jay, if i DO decide to take your advise and drive naked, i'm gonna force you to watch the video- it won't be pretty...

i have absolutely no access to a dirt bike, nor the resources to rent or otherwise temporarily retain one... had i the resources to somehow obtain one or borrow one, i would be clueless as to where to take it, to properly do what IronJoe suggested... although honing myself for this, as much as possible would probably be a good idea, i don't see that opportunity arising any time soon... however, going into this completely blind has some fun written on it... let's just get passed this video thing- if i make it, then i'll consider practicing, in any way possible...

DES the point about getting a bike was to get the feel of the dirt course. A bike has much more feedback than a car. It'll get you used to the feeling of driving on marbles!

I think for your video you should get naked and drive down the street in your car and talk about yourself. :-) It seems to work for the chicks trying to get on Survivor! LOL

Joe: we'll be racing cars, not bikes- but i understand what you're saying. i did a little bit of checking in to see if the company was legit, but i never called the BBB or anything like that (i suppose i should have, though...)

Ming: i'm definitely on the look out for a scam- i'm a New Yorker, we're born to see these things a mile away... so far, though, this gig looks for-real... we'lll see what happens, but for now, i just need to get them a picture and a video...

Hi Des,

Please do check the company as Joe said. If I wear like an idiot and walk around in town in Hong Kong for an hour, I will receive a lot of invitations of Model casting, Lucky travel winning prices for free travel etc. etc..

You will normally end up with paying something for training course, deposit for securing your place and so on!

Be VERY CAREFUL!

DES,You need to go get a cheap motocross bike or borrow one, ride morning to night to shape,n pshycoligically tune your eyes n brain to the dirt,Rally is not like Road-racing.Small looking bumps at 80 mph will launch you,Be Safe,Be Smart...I hope you make it...But also take to MIND that if your a SHOW PRODUCER and you want to get at least 8 shows under contract .Wouldnt it be logical to buy or rent a list of RACE-FREAKS n have a contest say you send out 100,000 e-mails n 1/2 % allready gave you 11.00 thats 55,000 start up fee to show the financial backers,But what you really wanted was the 15,000 minutes of IDEAS,which will probably edit down to 1000 minutes of worthwhile T.V.(if that)
The producer gets the contracts n commercials. If I were you I would check the strength of the production company first.Theirs only so many time slots and a ton of waiting reality shows,Like Dave said watch for hidden charges,n get some kind of competition under your belt.. And remember when Steve McQueen did LeManns he was a novice n he proved all those racers wrong......

Why does this remind me of the "major award" that was won by Darrin Mcgavin (Ralphy's dad) in "A Christmas Story"?

Jeff, i have a competitive nature in my blood and if you couple that with my unyielding desire to drive, it makes for a powerful mixture... i don't care if everyone else there trained for a decade under Steve McQueen & Michael Schumacher- it makes no difference to me- you can bet your ass they'll know who i am by the time the race is over... driving runs through me- literally- i can feel it...

Yes, Tim, i've done a little off-roading, albeit, not in the proper vehicle but i think i know what it's like... if it involves me driving and going fast, i'm in...!

Now i need some video ideas, people...! The tape needs to be postmarked by January 15th- i don't have much time...!

My stepson tried to qualify for this (or something like it) about a year ago, didn't make the cut. From what I've seen, rally racing is NOTHING like driving fast on the street, it requires inhuman skills and special techniques. Even experienced track racers tend to get stomped when they try rallying!

Apparently, this is for amateurs- i think if a professional applied, he'd be disqualified, 'cause it would be no contest... If size is a factor, then i'm in trouble... i weigh in at just over 240...
i already answered those questions, though: height, weight, etc, and they apparently had no problem...

The only money i gave them was my $11.00 application fee- they haven't asked for anything else, and they've also stated- in several different places- that all fees are paid, etc, etc...

No, Tim, i don't currently- unless you count boy-racing my Sentra down the parkway at 110 mph... i've never raced anything aside from whatever car i might've been driving, down whatever road i might've been driving on... i have no formal racing experience- just the passion that courses through me to drive to compete and my overwhelming desire for speed...

Tim, i really hope there isn't a size requirement for F1 racing- that's the type of racing i've always dreamed of doing- that and whatever type of racing it is with all the Ferraris and 'Vettes and Vipers, Porsches, BMWs, etc, etc...

How about videos... any ideas for videos...?

What are the physical requirements to be a racecar driver? i really hope lightness isnt a factor. i noticed most F1 drviers are like 140lbs, im 180, and i might be too tall to fit in an F1, i better stay in school.

A quick question: how much will this cost you to do? I have heard that these folks charge their contestants. Is that true?

Ok... i think i'm calm enough that i can get this out, pretty clearly... you couldn't begin to comrephend how excited i was, when i got the email this morning... Let me start from the beginning...

Several months ago, a friend of mine (i call her Bird) sent me an email with a link to a website called Rally Racer. i went there and it's a competition/tv show/rally race-type thing. i immediately registered. Soon after, they send me an email confirming my registration and that i should "stand by for further instructions". About a week later, they sent me a follow-up email, directing me to their website where i was required to answer a slew of multiple choice questions and complete some essay questions- eight separate sections in all, the eighth requesting i upload a picture of myself, IF and WHEN i qualify. i completed 7 of 8 sections and waited for them to email me again, informing me as to whether i would move on to be a finalist or not... and i waited some more...

i waited for a while.

Then, this morning, i came into the office, checked the office email then proceeded to check my personal email and, to my ultimate surprise, there was an email from them. i sat there, staring at the bold, blue link to open it up. Hesitant to click on it, fearing it might be a "thank you, but..." message, i stared for a few more moments. " it," i said, and i clicked on it.

"Congratulations! You Are A Chosen Finalist!"

i immediately stood up and clenched my butt cheeks for fear that i might a brick. i checked my email everyday for the last two months, waiting for a response from them- anything, just let me know where i stand- and finally, here it was.

The email went on to state that i needed to upload a picture of myself to their website and i also needed to mail them a picture of myself as well as a 3 minute video of myself.

i'm so stoked...! i've dreamed of racecar-driving my whole life...! Ok, so i don't even know if i qualify, yet, but i AM a finalist and that's something to be excited about.

i'm competing against who knows how many people, so my question is this: What would all of you advise my 3 minute video be. i want to incorporate some sort of driving in there- something indicative of my passion for being part of the sport, but i don't want it to be so flooded with race-related stuff that it looks cheesy; i understand i need to talk about myself- i don't even know what to say. i'm looking for ideas- i have a few, but i think some input from all of you would really help me out.

If i qualify, i have to go "an undisclosed location" for a 4-day weekend, for a battery of tests- physical, psychological, etc. From there, they'll let me know if i'm competent to compete. (We all know i'm very mentally stable! :-)), so from there, they "show" will start. It will air sometime next year. There will be only 16 finalists, to compete in rally racing for 6 weeks and the winner gets to be the main driver for some professional team, the following season and walks away with ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

Sure, the money seems sweet, but to just compete in something like this is a once in a life time opportunity. i want this so bad, but i know i need to keep a level head about things and take it one step at a time. Right now, i could really use some 3-minute-video ideas. Any suggestions.

Thanks so much, everybody.
