Will,

You have been rebuilding that 512tr for the past couple years- what are you going to do with it if you get at 962?

William,
Try http://www.962.com/, which is a quite useful site. A Terry noted below, the 956/962 is the most successful endurance racer in history, plus, you would have extensive parts and technical support through both Andial and Porsche Motorsports North America which actively supports and supplies vintage racers campaigning these cars.

Good luck,
Tim

The S7 is very cool, I reaaly like it but I can get a 962 for $100k less so thats an easy choice.

Gordon and his crew have bought out Akin's shop from his family and they have renamed it Hudson Historics

962 is the way to go for me/ Ground effects are something to consider, thanks. I'll have Bob Akin's old outfit crewing for me.

Can Am cars are awesome but dangerous, your feet stick out in front of the front wheels, No thanks

$50,000? Real T70 MKIIIb coupes begin at 175K and go up to 800K for ones with real history.

You just cannot compare a 962 against a Lola. You can buy a Lola for less than 50K. A 962 is 250K and up. The bottom line is you could purchase a Lola, a backup and spare parts for less than 1/3 of a Porsche.

The 962 along with its 956 brother were perhaps the most successful endurance racecars in history. Ive seen them up for sale for less than $300,000. I believe the 962 would be among the easier to run of cars in this class as well. I have met some guys who run them in PCA club racing and even do track days with them. They generally run engines that are a bit de-tuned for reliability. Still... 500hp in de-tuned state makes for an EXTREMELY fast car. The guys I have known running like this did not have pit crews, they just unloaded the cars, fired them up and ran. Then again I have also seen 962's driven at vintage races where they had large pit crews, spare engines and trans, and an overall effort that looked like a modern LeMans team!

The Nissan GTP cars had a reputation for being diabolical in handling, very hard to drive on the edge and very dangerous. Bob Akins was killed in one at a vintage race at Road Atlanta earlier this year. I remember seeing Chip Robinson and Davy Jones both have terrible accidents at Road Atlanta back in '90 I believe.

I would much rather have a Lola T70 than any of the more modern GTP cars, the Lola or a Ford MKIV are both just so much more cool! The older cars would also have more vintage racing possibilities. I dont know which would cost more to run, like all racing it would boil down to just how fast you want to go. The old exponential relationship: how much money do you have?

Omar
The 962 is a LeMans winning racecar.
Joseph
A friend of mine was recently killed driving one of these cars. As they are very, very powerful and are ground effect cars when you lose them it is very bad. They also require quite a pit crew (They have to be warmed before they can be started.)

How about one of those Nissan GTP car's from the 80's that won all the time. Maybe it was the early 90's. Those had a great rep. But 962's are so well known and awsome!!

IMHO the Lola T-70 is very beautiful and is very fun and fast. There's a pic of my coupe in MK-IV thread. The Can Am Lola's and McLaren's give you alot of bang for your buck.

so i'm looking for a race car that has investment potential but is still fun & fast.

I want to stay away from carbon fiber & lots of computers. So the 962 is at the top of my list although it does use computers, it has little carbon fiber & parts are plentiful.

I'm also considering other early GTP cars with aluminum tubs & fiberglass bodies . CanAm cars are Way cool. no computers at all & brutal power.

anybody know of any good CanAm websites.

what do you think of the 962 vs other GTP vs Can Am cars ? Thanks
