Correct me if I'm wrong... I believe residential DSL runs downstream at a speed of 300 kbps. I just ran a speed report for my cable modem - http://www.dslreports.com/stest .... I'm running up at 100 kbps and down at 1000. This, I believe, is 3+ times faster than DSL... at least "home" DSL service. DSL is probably more reliable.... my cable ISP service goes down every now and then. |

Bruno- Wouldn't worry much about the 1 way service. The upload is only when you are sending information out to the internet. Unless you are running some sort of server for others to access (violation of cable contract anyays) it should not matter. They key is having the cable co set it up right the first time- it might take a little bit of work on their part as it can be tricky sometimes. If you have any questions feel free to ask me- I work with telco's and cable companies on the backend for Cisco- so I know a bit about this stuff. ;-) I am assuming no DSL in your area? Satellite (DSS) will have the same problem as the cable 1 way- many use the telephone connection to dial for the upload. |

I found out now that my cable only offers "1 way service" and I need to use the phone line to upload. Not to thrilled about that.calling my satelite company to see what they offer. Anyone have experiences with 1 way? |

Bruno, prices on Wireless LANs have come way down since I put mine in 18 mos ago... I think you can get the wireless base unit (switch/router) for about $100. Then you need the wireless cards for each remote PC... they run about $75 each and come in a couple different varieties (PCMCIA, USB, internal). Linksys used to be the only player in town... but now there's several companies selling the stuff. |

Bruno. Depends on your vendor, here in CT i bought mine for $100 but now thier free. Very important is make sure you get a firewall as your 'live' all the time when pc is on. I have Zonealarm which is a free download for the basic protection. |

I have a wireless network (Linksys) in my house and love it. We have the cable modem connected to the router and out from there. We can take the laptop into the TV area and play around while watching TV... or take it to the back yard. We have 4 PCs connected throughout the house. One suggestion, put the wireless base station (with antenna) in the center of the house... or centerpoint of all your PCs. Sometimes the signal is weak but overall it's great! |

Fine. I have the same setup at home. I have the DSL connected to a router. the router connected to a mini switch and the wireless unit connected to the miniswitch. You can get a combo router/wireless now however. If your ISP provides multipule IP addresses or it NAT's (network address translation) then you are fine and good to go. But you will need to verify with them first. If they don't there are ways to correct it. Let me know |

Matt: What do you think about a wireless network for my home? I have a laptop and a desk top, and the desk top has DSL to it now, without a connection to the laptop. Both are current IBM machines, with quite a bit of memory (512) Art |

What do i want to do.Get an external modem installed in a common area with a router?.Do i even need a router cant i just use 1 computer at a time?Switch manually? Wireless?. Hard wire? Ethernet cards?. Dont want to brea the bank either. Dont care if it's wireless or not whatever is cheaper in the long run. |
