Sorry about that Shadetree Enginetrics the shop that works on my car here in Dallas. Yes the 308GT4 runs, but is rather cosmetically challenged ;)

Personally I would pick up a:

Nice Scorpion: 6K
Nice 81-82 Fiat Spider 4K
85 Pinanfarina Spider 8K
Nice Late X 4K

Obviously prices vary widely depending on your location.

At the above mentioned prices you should be able to fly in and drive the cars cross country.

Thats what I would prefer Peter, just a nice looking cool collectable and cheap first sports car until I get my Ferrari :-) However, I dont need the best Fiat in the world, just a nice looking one :-)

Jordan, stay away from GT4's that need work. $10K will buy the absolute best X/1-9, Alfa/Fiat Spider, or Lancia Scorpion in the WORLD and you'll have money left over (for food, rent, beer, etc...).

Im sorry, but what is shadetree? Is that some sort of website? I wouldn't mind picking up a 308GT4 for that price, but how well would it even run? For my first sports car Im looking at 10k or less *preferably less so I can save more money in the bank for a nicer car after college!*

I think Id rather a good condition Alfa or Fiat than an old beater F-car for right now :-) Thanks you guys for pointing the Fiat Spider how to me, somehow I always forget about it when Im looking for cars :-)

Tillman has a point. You could probably pick up the 308GT4 @ shadetree for 10K or so. However if it were me get the X or a Scorpion. You don't want a college car that puts you in the poor house.

Jordon,

Here's another vote for the X1/9 as a great college car. I had two during college, and they were fun.

Alternatively, you could probably pick up a slightly rough 308GT4 for the same price as a 911. There's been one for sale here for a while at $10K and another at $12K.

In any case, have a great 2003, everyone.

Peter,

Nope don't own the Scorpions any more. My left knee just could not take the firewall clearance for more than a couple of days @ a time. Basically the same reason I have not purchased a TR. I sold the perfect car to a fellow in Chicago, and traded the 16V FI car to my mechanic for work on my Maserati Indy. I exchanged the little cars for big comfortable ones.

The only "small" car I kept was the FIAT Spider. Although it's small the interior cabin is very comfortable, in fact more than Marci's Maserati.

Rodney, I'm still kicking myself for not getting the Scorpion I saw a few years back (S/N: 0731). Needed work, but loved the colour. I almost bought 0856 too, but back then, didn't have enough money (just outta school and was preparing for my move to B.C. Canada).

I've seen your name mentioned many times on the Scorpion Register. You still have any of those cars?

Hey Jordan,

I would echo Peter's statement. Get an X or a late model FIAT Spider. The FIATs draw about the same attention as an ALFA, with parts @ 1/2 the price. The late model Spiders are rock solid dependable. The FIAT will take muck more abuse than an ALFA.

The Scorpion is also a good candidate and quite a bit more solid than a 914. I have owed both. My Scorpion never left me stranded, not so with the 914.

Of course the same thing can be said of my FIAT Spider, never left me stranded. My ALFA left me stranded several times. Both cars were in the same relative shape etc. Of course if you can find a 90s ALFA Spider in good shape, that would be my choice, but not in the same $$$$$ range as the other cars.

Good Luck

Happy New Years folks!!!

(Jordan, uhhh, don't get a P-car. You're on an Italian car site now, you're supposed to look forward to getting an Alfa Spider, or a Fiat X/1-9, or even classier than that, a Lancia Scorpion... )

Happy New Year everyone, my resolution is to get my first sports car, an old classic Porsche of some kind...probably an old 914 or 911/912 (just to get me through college...then I go F-cars all the way!)

Like everyone else has said, may it be a good and safe year!

Why would we want the economy to rebound? If it did, GMAC, other auto finance companies, and banks in general would be charging 10 or 12 percent interest rates like they were when the economy was GOOD. What's the use of making more money in a good economy when the big corporations just gouge you for the extra money that you have earned? I'd rather pay 6 percent interest on home loans and ZERO percent interst on car loans any day.
