The Portofino? That sounds like a mushroom pasta dish I had recently. I'm not surprised that wasn't built. |

Kevin, your post reminds me of several concepts that fell victim to the same ideal: Corvette Indy - The mid engine 'vette Chevrolet Cerv III Pontiac Banshee Buick Wildcat The new Stingray The Chrysler 300 concept that was basically a luxury Viper The Portofino Although these cars were never built, you can see their designs in cars that are on the road today. I think the big 3 do it for promotion as well as to test the reception of the general public. they all have a car in their history that should have never left the design room. I guess its their way of test marketing. This SS though, was built just to slow you down while you are running to the ferraris. at first glance it looks like a ferrari, so you slow down and have a second look at it, recognize the trickery, and keep running towards the enzo. |

I've become rather disillusioned by American concepts. I saw this car in addition to the Cadillac 16 (to which GM said, "We don't know if we'll build it."). As I frequent the NAIAS I see how much the big 3 have been hipe-ing the future of the automotive industry. Last year Buick (I think) had some blue egg with 4 wheels and a steering wheel and called it the future of the automotive industry. But all I could see was a blue egg with 4 wheels and a steering wheel. Then I go to BMW and see i-drive, then to Ferrari to see the F-1 tranny on a V-12. This year I'll see the Enzo. The 575 is being produced, the Enzo is being produced, the 745i is being produced. The blue egg with wheels?... will never be produced. The Cadillac 16?... I doubt will be produced (come on, a Cadillac versus the Maybach? for $300K?) The Chevy SS? Don't know. They'll probably make a car "inspired by the SS" and call it a Vette, but this car I doubt will be produced. Ultimately, it seems to me that the future of the automotive industry rarely comes out of the US. In fact, a BMW dealer told me they once hosted a meeting of Ford designers to which one Ford designer went over to a 5-series and said, "Ok, this is what is being done. Why aren't we doing this?" Additionally, I get the hint that the big 3 do this just for promotion. Ford is spending $x00,000,000 on their display (a giant blue oval). Last year Chrysler had a Cirque de Soliel show in the middle of their display. People flocked to see the show, but left as soon as it was done. "Oh, there were cars there?" Ferrari pays nothing for its display space. They show 5 cars plus the F1. Lambo shows two cars. Each display is PACKED out with people. When Ferrari was moving the cars off its display everyone in Cobo Hall stopped to look and listen. I doubt anyone saw the blue egg leave. I doubt many cared. I expect the same when the Caddy and the Chevy are sent out. But when the Enzo is fired up, people will listen. The point? I'm no longer amazed or impressed at these concepts. American manufacturers often hide behind the ploy "it costs too much to build" and they shelve all of these concepts to become the pipe dream of the next design director and auto show. I'm not impressed or amused, nor am I surprised to see the homage paid to Italian design in this particular concept car. |

Andrew, I can see how you can be skeptical, even I thought it was a little too close to ferrari design cues. And as much as i love to use photoshop, there is no way that I can create this. You can check this link if you like: http://autoshow.msn.com/autoshow2003/article.aspx?xml=GMConcepts

Honestly I am skeptical. I will do some research on this, I see that the back end of this car is almost the same as a standard 360 with the exception of the exhaust pipes. I know that I would make this same car in photoshop, as im sure other people can. Andrew |

That's a really nice looking car. I wouldn't mind having that in the driveway along with the Fcar. That rear view sure would confuse a lot of people. |

Hello everyone! I've been reading this board for a while but this my first post. As I was looking at the concept cars in the North American International Auto Show, I saw this, the concept for a Chevrolet Super Sport. I guess this is what you get when you cross a 360 and a 550. This exerpt is from motortrend.com: Chevrolet SS The young-gun designer behind the head-turning Chrysler PT Cruiser, Bryan Nesbitt, introduced the Chevrolet SS to hearty applause. Now serving as GM executive director of design, Nesbitt explained how the five-seater embodies the Super Sport heritage in a modern sports sedan, with the 21- and 22-inch wheels pushed out to the corners for a muscular stance. Seeming to draw design influence from Ferrari, the SS is all-American underhood with a 6.0-liter/430-horsepower V-8 touting GM's imminent Displacement On Demand technology scheduled to appear in some 2004 models. The independent suspension features driver-adjustable shock damping. "It all adds up to an aspirational vehicle performance car for Main Street America, and it points toward the next-generation of Chevy SS vehicles," said Nesbitt.
