87-89 strong cars and as Joseph states G50 tranny is a must. 93-94 C4 and C2 are excellent cars. I own a 95 993 and love the car. I have driven the 996 and it seems to have lost a bit of the sports car type ege and is to refined for my taste. The 70-73 911S is one hell of a car also. It all depends on what he is looking for and what body style he likes. |

Numerous of the early 99 911's had to have complete engine replacements under warranty. But AFAIK, that fixed the problems. So, I don't think there's much more to worry about at this point. But rennlist is the place to go.

In defense of the '99 996, I have one that I bought new in 1998. It now has 52,000 miles on the odo and has had no problems other than a dud CD changer when new. I have two other friends that bought 99's around the same time and they also had no problems. While working for a Porsche dealership last year I learned that the first year 996 TT ('00 I believe) engine was problematic, but never heard anything about the normally aspirated cars. As far as recall work, Porsche replaced my gas cap with an identical one that reads, "Tighten until you hear the clicking sound" or something like that. There was also a recall on some seal around that self-elevating rear spoiler thing but, having the factory aero kit, it didn't apply to my car. |

DES 993 and 996 are internal numbers that Porsche uses to signify diffrent model years. Sorry about that it can be confusing I know it confused me too. 993 is the model year from 95-98 and those are the last of the air-cooled models. The 996 designates the watercooled models which started in 99 and continues to today. Your boss should be able to get a nice 993 example for 40k. |

If $40K is the number I highly recommend a 96-97 911 Carrera (993) |

The 996 is the new body style body code for the 911. In other words, it is a 911. I am asking $61500 for the car...And I can lease it to him.. Jonathan P |

John, thanks, but i was just speaking with him- it has to be a 911... Now he's telling me he's stuck in a lease, so he can't lease one, so he's looking to buy outright, but doesn't want to spend more than 40k... Sorry for the confusion, everyone and i appreciate everyone's help... i'll keep this updated in case he finds a buyer for his present lease... |

I would suggest the 993 series 95-98. 96 was the first year of varioram which added about 12 or 15 extra h.p. over the 95 year. 95 also had a few issues but most bugs should be worked out by now. Price ranges for these cars seem to be in the high 30's to high 50's for naturally aspirated cars. Definately check out www.rennlist.com it is a very informative site. |

Scott, yes, a twin turbo would certainly make him happier... Nick, i know they don't start at 128k, but he went to the dealership and checked one out and it was around 80k... then, after all the options he wanted, they said he was looking at around 128k... not really his cup of tea... |

Good internet sites to go to are www.roadfly.com (Porsche section) and www.rennlist.com. Both have car for sale sections. '02 Cars are going from 5K (Boxster) to 10K (996 twin turbo) off of sticker (this is new cars from authorized dealers). '03's are a bit less off, except from certain Porsche dealers that seem to be hurting. Recently used cars are even more off. I assume from the price you quoted he wants a twin turbo? |

Thanks, fellas... i think he would drop 83k or lease it if the car was to his liking (he's very peculiar about what he wants when he's getting something)... He was looking at early 90's models, earlier, but also current models... On a lease, i would say he'd be willing to spend about 1k a month... HAS to be a stick- none of that automatic or triptronic crap, he'll can me if i approach him with info a car that's not a stick... i told him when he gets one, my car will mysteriously break down and i'll need a ride to work, everyday... unfortunate, though, i only live a mile from the office... |

DES, I just looked at a beautiful new 2003 Carrera4S at a Porsche dealer in So Cal over the weekend. It was being offered to me at an exceptionally low price ($~83k) It has a turbo body, midnight blue with black interior. Let me know if he is interested and I can provide him some contact details... It's not a bargain used price, but for the money, I don't think you can find a C4S. Otherwise, I suggest '95 or '98 year air-cooled 993's. They were great years for these cars. |

What's his $ range or model year range? The 911 turbo ranges from '77-'03 and $17k-$145k.
