Fred-

Here's what I'd do.

And I'm being serious.

Go onto E-bay and look for a Fiat X 1/9 with a good body, no rust.

Buy it for, maybe, $2k.

Next, find a Fiat parts supplier in your area, and buy:

1. Rebuilt short block.
2. Big valve head.
3. Header.
4. Street cam.
5. 4 new calipers (hi-po)
6. 14 inch wheels.
7. Nice set of tires.
8. Koni struts.

All of these parts will set you back, MAYBE another $2k. Add another $2k to have to parts installed.

For $6k, you'll have a 1900lb, 2 seater, mid-engined car, using Ferrari 308 suspensin components, with a 120bhp engine capable of propelling you from 0-60 in a little over 5 seconds. You'll get 30mpg, you'll spend MAYBE 30 bux a month on insurance, you'll have a convertable, and the best of all, you'll have something FUN and completely ORIGINAL.

I've got an 83X, and while it can be a little fussy at times, I love the car to death, and I will NEVER get rid of it. With modern tires and modern struts, the car eaily does over 1g in turns.

Really fun, and really cheap.

Check a few out on the internet. They are fun as hell.

In fact, I found this place because it was linked by a guy on a Fiat X1/9 site that I frequent.

Fred,
Sorry about your P-car experience. I know someone who walked into a dealer wearing jeans and workboots. He asked to see and discuss a new 911. They didn't take him seriously so he made a bit of a scene and finally got attention. (He's a very successful contractor with an impressive collection of cars). He DID buy that 911 but he wasn't happy with the initial treatment.

If you're looking into a 350Z, don't forget to check on the Infiniti G35 coupe. It's the same chassis and engine with slightly more luxury and smoother lines. Got Motor Trend's Car of the Year Award this year and performs almost as well as the 350. Might be worth a test drive, IMO...

Yes, this the the one I bought a month and a half ago. And yes, I bought a warranty for it.

However, it was intended as just another car to decorate the driveway. Sort of like x-mas ornaments. Just kidding. Really, it was just another interim car for weekends when I didn't feel like driving any of the others. I thought since it was cheaper, it would be more practical.

I got turned off rather quickly by Porsche. Mostly by the dealership/service dept attitude. Also, after beginning to read the P-chat type boards, I noticed that P-car owners are a bit arrogant (my opinion!). More importantly, I kept reading about blown engines and engines that leak oil. Post after post about cars that fail to defy why someone would pay that kind of money for cr*p. Not just a few, a lot of them! That's why I wanted a warranty. The fact that Porsche hasn't publicly admitted there's an issue made me feel uneasy.

After giving it some thought, and feeling like 'bending over' was mandatory at the P-car dealership, I sold it.

Yes, the 4Runner could probably be beat by a 'snail with gum on it's shoe', but I love it. I can drive one of my other cars if I want speed. I am also thinking about adding one of the new 350Z cars to the stable.

Here's one about the latest price gouging on Porsches. The balance shaft belt for a certain model now suddenly costs $133 as opposed to $45 a few months ago. The belt can be had for $29 from various places that sell P parts.

Any engine can and will eventually leak oil.

Fred, it's obvious that Martin has alterior motives: "Bending over is optional"

...so you'd be better off letting me drive it.

I agree with DES on the Enzo. But I am closer to you than DES is. :-O

What do you use the car for? Daily or weekend driver?

I have a 308 Fiberglass that would make a nice weekend driver.
Have a 348 Spider that would make a nice daily.

Bending over is optional :-)

Fred, i beat a 4Runner in my Sentra, not too long ago, from a red light, for what was probably a quarter of a mile (maybe a little less), so without the Porsche, i know you're gonna start going through speed withdrawal... You should definitely replace it with an Enzo and let me come over and test it out for you... :-)

Well, I sold the Porsche Boxster this morning. Sad to see it go, but I don't know if I will ever buy another P-car.

From what I understand now, it appears like almost every car they produce leaks oil or will sometime in the future. It seems like everyone I know has had rear main seal failures.

I also didn't like the snotty attitude at the dealer. Nor did I appreciate the arrogance of the district service manager. The f-car dealer at least strokes me before asking me to bend over.

Funny how my 1992 Toyota 4Runner with 156k miles still puts a smile on my face. Good fit & finish, well designed, reliable (for the most part) and practical.

Now, what do I replace the P-car with???????
