Hans is famous! I picked up an old issue of R&T (May 1987) from an automobilia store yesterday and as with any old mag, I check out the classifieds. I saw your ad selling Callaway Corvettes: "In stock, immediate delivery. Contact Hans Hansen, Hansen Chevrolet..."!

I was at Callaway when they were building the predecessor to the 'Sledgehammer'. It was a white car that ended up doing 231mph in a C&D mag article called (if I remember correctly) "A Gathering of Eagles". What was curious was the rather large decal (I have a photo somewhere....) under the hood that said "Property of Chev Motor Div R&D Dept" (or something to that effect.) In effect, the car was GM sponsored, but in an under-the-table manner. Also curious was all the Delco Electronics equipment for programming the ECUs. All of it was labeled "Property of General Motors". |

DES: I used to drive Callaways as my daily driver. Much prefer the '87 to the later ones, even tho the later ones have more power. The '87s developed full boost at only 1800rpm, no lag. 88 and onward only came into boost at higher rpm, and would loose pressure during shifts - you had to wait for them to 'spool up', unless, of course, you did a real abusive speed shift. (Err, wouldn't know personally. ) The '86 was bought as a semi-investment/garage queen. Was at the Daytona auto museum for quite a number of years. Currently has about 10K miles. |

Has anyone here ever gone 240 mph in a car, before...? At best, i've only done half that... However, when you're going faster than you've ever gone before, it's a feeling unlike any other... That thrill, that rush, it's intense... But almost immediately after, you want more... "i wanna go faster"... i remember when cruising at 80 was enough to satisfy me, bringing it up to 85 every so often... It wasn't long, though, before 90 was my limit and now i push 105- sometimes 110 and even that's not enough anymore... Only reason i don't go faster is 'cause i just plain can't. My car just won't budge beyond that... i've never gone 240 mph, so i don't know how it feels... i might like it or it might scare a bowel movement out of me, but one thing's for sure: if the opportunity is ever available to me, i'll sure as hell take it...! So, yes, Chris, someone out there is definitely saying "hmm...the McClaren's fast, but..." and no, nothing's ever fast enough... Speed isn't just a hobby or a television channel, it's an instinct; an emotion, as strong as love or hate. Speed is a way of life. Moving on, Hans, do you still drive your '86 Callaway...? |

Kenny,
I have no idea how to make it faster, but is anything ever "fast enough?" I thought that the Vipers had enough torque and power, but Doug Levin is building those things up over 1000 hp right now. That is scary power, I'm sure there's somebody out there that would say "hmm...the McClaren's fast, but..." |

I was heavily involved in the Callaway stuff in the late '80's. I helped export the car that set the "Fastest Street Legal Car in Japan". (Drove it from Roseburg, OR to the Port of Portland, averaged well over 100mph for the 200 mile trip, and cruised for an all-to-brief period at 170.) I still own the only 1986 Callaway made. The 'regular' production began in 1987. Chassis # 86-001. |

The McLaren's owner is Dan Kennedy, a big restaurant owner in Phoenix. Nice guy. I met him & his daughter at a Bondurant course I took in December 2001. Dan has a LOT of cars. He came to the class in his brand new BMW E46 M3, and his daughter had her race-prepped E36 M3. Dan also has a 550 Maranello. In fact--ultimate coincidence--there were a total of 3 guys in the same class with 550's. The 3rd guy, Marvin Jones, was also from Arizona, and drove his car to Bondurant each day...but not on track (I flew in & had a rental car). |

The Calloway Corvette, while fast and kinda cool, is still a Vette. The McClaren though....I would drive that thing every single day. I'm kind of surprised that we haven't run across some rich, slightly eccentric person modding the hell out of a McClaren yet. I bet Norwood or Koenig could do a number on it |

(sorry to take over the thread) Des, the Sledgehammer had 880hp- 0-60 in 3.9, a 1/4 mile in 10.6, and extremely extremely wide gears to get to that speed. I think they were produced for 400k at that point- only 1 was made. I'd take the McLaren over this- just too cool to give up! |

Des, its the Callaway Corvette Sledgehammer, good for 254.7mph! If you go to supercars.net and go to the top speed list, is should be on the top! |

Chris, that's really some handy-dandy mobile telecommunications you have going there... sweet... As far as the McLaren... WHOOOOOOOOO...! i'd easily donate both nads, RIGHT NOW, for that car... SuhWEET...! Oh, & the color is awesome, too... Since this was brought up, though, it is my understanding that a late 80's model Corvette Sledgehammer holds the record for fastest street car- at something like 256mph top speed... Anyone have any info on this...? (Don't wanna hijack the thread, dude, i'm just wondering... Feel free to email me, anyone, if you know what i'm talking about... Thanks... ) |

Who and why is someone getting rid of it. If you got that kind of money why not keep that. He probably wanted to upgrade to a Ferrari |

If so, check out www.mclaren4sale.com . I love the color on it (although I'm sure there will be responses on that!). Posting this from my T-mobile Sidekick in the parking lot at my office. I love it--Ferrarichat on the go! |
