Wow!! 27lb's is definatly quite a bit of weight to put on in such short a time.

I'm ashamed to say that I used the juice (sauce,crank....whatever you wanna call it) back in my football days, and even then I was unable to put that much weight on in such a short amount of time. Usually when large gains like that are made, it's water being stored in the muscles.

I was never on the track team or anything, i would have been fasdt enough to be good in highschool, but i didnt want to play 3 sports. theres no way im fast enough to be a runner in college. BEfore i thought i could only sprint, but i realzed that i could do distances. when go running i try to keep a 6:30 mile for 4 miles. the best and last time i ever ran a single mile in was 5:15. that was almost a year ago. I dont like to run but i know its something i have to do if i ever wanna pull a 6:30 in the 2k for crew. thats next years goal, this years is a 6:45.

i dont know if i have the patience to run a marathon, but it would be cool to say i did. my sister ran the NY maraton in 4 something a few months ago.

Tim,

I used to be all about endurance, but I figured I'd see what I could do in 8 weeks.

What is your fastest time in running?

While in the corps, the fastest I ever ran was three miles in 20:07. I did the LA Marathon in 6:05. My body is just too big to go an faster. :-(

I never take a long time in between sets. i lift to increase endurace. They need to last me for 6:45, which is my easily reachable goal for the 2k. Thats equivelent to about 200 reps at full pressure, balls to the wall saving nothing.

Well, a few years ago, when I used to lift, I would do a very intense program that took about 45 minutes. I would sweat my nuts off, and I could barely leave the gym when I was done.

I did this summer differently. I would do a set, and then wait maybe 3 - 5 minutes. It took a long time for me to break a sweat, but I found that if I gave whatever muscle I was working a good amount of time in between sets, I could do a lot more weight.

I would usually wait until my heart rate was down to completely normal.

I did the same amount of work as I did in the 45 minute workout, just over a longer period of time.

That's true, you should NEVER spend more than 65 - 75 minutes MAX lifting. Your testosterone levels fall through the floor after that.

Also, you are overtraining (your muscles are broken down more than they have time to rebuild before you start training them again.

You should work out every other day, for a little over an hour, for best results (do cardio on your off days, right after you wake up in the morning.

Manu -

The coach that trained me is a guy around 24 years old, and he still trains regualarly. He's a hot shot in pole-vaulting, and he coaches the track and field team at my college. He's trained his whole life, and he trains all the kids on the track & field team day in, day out. He's got a masters in kineisiology (sp??), and he's seen just about all of it.

He was surprised as hell when he saw myh weight gain! With all the training he's done, with all the people he's trained, with his master's, EVERYTHING, he was shocked.

In fact, he first thought that the scale in the gym was broken becuase big football players are always abusing it. He took me to another scale just to be sure, and it was measuring the same thing.

While I wish I was superhuman, here's the reality of the situation.

As a long distance runner, my legs had become TINY. They were packed with very lean muscle that could go the distance. In terms of strenght, there wasn't much. My ass had virtually nothing. I spent a long time running, and my legs became twigs. During my running eras, I never worked out my upper body, because I needed to be as light as possible (my knees took the brunt of my 190lbs).

When I started the weight training, I looked like a piece of beef jerky.

Sooo...I did massive weight programs. Spent a lot of time on my back, chest, and legs. Like I said, my legs probably absorbed 50% of the weight I gained. By the end of the summer, I was doing 5 sets of 12 on the upright rows with a stacked machine. My lats and traps had grown a lot, as well. My chest, while still weak, was considerably stronger than it had been.

Here, though, is why I am NO superman. I plateaud BIG TIME at the 6 or 7th week. I was doing everything except sterroids, and my legs and back and chest had hit a HUGE wall.

While it may seem like I was superman, it seems as though my body was just filling into where is *should* be, but wasn't due to the fact that I was running so much.

Does that make any sense?

Nebula - what you're effectively saying is that you gained 27lbs of muscle in 6 weeks... which if you are not juicing like a madman means you are genetically, the most gifted man in the entire world...
3 hours of weight/power lifting per day is IMMENSE... it spells HORRIFIC overtraining for mere-mortals like me.

27 lbs over six weeks....... Listen mate this isn't a flame but that implies you were putting on 4.5lbs OF MUSCLE EVERY WEEK........ are you serious... I ask again, are you juicing... HELL - are you human ? :-)

Wayne, I am also 5'10" & I dropped from 220 and weigh 198 today, My ultimate goal is 175-180.

For excercise I lift weights 3 or 4 days a week, run 40 minutes a day 3 days a week & dont eat dinner, large salad for lunch.

I like to ski too, When I was skiing in Italy I did something to my knee the first day. I think that had to do with my running also.

By the way, I've lost 37 lbs in the last 5 1/2 weeks and I'm still losing. This is without any exercise and with no medication whatsoever. I am 5'10" and weighed 235 lbs on December 8. As of today I weigh in at 198. My goal is to reach 175, which should be obtainable within a month or so. If any of you are seriously overweight, you can contact me via e-mail if you want to know more about my diet. Believe me, though, it's not for the weak! You have to be very serious about losing the weight fast (and even so, you might want to talk to your doctor before trying it).

Hey Tim.....the main reason that my running partner and I quit running is because our knees HURT! I ran the marathon in Nike Shox, and they were great on the joints, but after the nine months in training and after the run ittself, we don't think our hips and knees can deal with it anymore. 6 foot+ just isn't a good frame to do long distance running on.

As for the weight gain, the majority of the weight I put on was in my quads and ass. I never did squats before, and I could definately tell a HUGE difference. I'd say 50% of the weight I put on was ass and legs. It's amazing, because when I weas running, I had a flat and saggy ass. What is cool is that, even after not working out for sooooo long, my ass is still round! I love it!

It;s hard to beleive, but it's true! The coach that trained me was amazed at the weight gain. By the end of the 8 weeks, I was doing 5 sets of 12 @ 185 on the bench, which ain't too bad for me. I never maxed out, but my coached assumed I might toss up 235.....

Davidson.....sorry for being a . Hope you don't mind. Yeah, 4% is totally unrealistic, and I can see your point.....sorry for the exaggeration! :-)

Tim, physically, my frame is on its last legs (lol, no pun intended)... There are excercises i can do to work out some injuries, but i'm just too lazy and don't much care... Without those rehab excercises, any other excercise is just about impossible... i did lower body work my freshman year in highschool... i jogged when i was a kid, so working my legs out was always second nature... i don't even do that anymore... i used to play basketball... i don't even do that anymore, although i wouldn't mind shooting a few around when the weather gets nicer... My body has served it's purpose well over the years, but ultimately, it's not really something i need... It's just a 'vehicle'- i won't use it forever...

The rate im going, im headed for liver failure in 4 years, lol. seriously though, once i started working out, it became an addiction. I never thought i would get so into rowing after loving wrestling and football so much, but now its like my drug. each practice i see my split times going lower and lower, and i feed off of that. its sort of like a drug. maybe i'm crazy or im a masicist, but i like the feeling of being totally exhausted after working my ass off, making my body give more even though my mind tells me i have nothing left. I dont even like the way previously good tasting stuff tastes because it's so unhealthy. Key is to stop eating fast food, deep fried stuff, and high sugar stuff. My shoulder is f--ed up from football, and crew is going to ruin my back, but other than that i should last a while. DES, im telling you, start excersizing. you feel so good.

I lost 50 lbs in 3 months with the Body for Life program.

I think they have a website: www.bodyforlife.com. Not sure if that's it though.

When i was 20, i took one of those cheesy tests that asks you a bunch of questions then you add up the score and it tells you when you're scheduled to die... After i added it up, it said i would die by the time i reached 18... Either the test was crap or i'm just a machine...!

4% is rediculously low. 6'1" 190 sounds a little heavy for a distance runner though. with that frame you should go out for crew. If you were 220 @ 4%, you would be JACKED. In weighed 164 last wresltling season, and i was certified to 160.4lbs. i couldnt wreslte anything lower than 160 because that would mean i was under 8% or whatever the # is. a very fit male would be ~10% im guessing. putting on 30lbs in 8 weeks usually only happens when you go on the program. good results from steroids is 15lbs in 6 weeks, 30 in 8 is beyond that. your bones/joints wont grow nearly that fast and it wil make you highly succeptable to injury. If you did it naturally, wat to go and good work, you must have the frame for it. You also wouldnt put on that much weight without eating alot of carbs too.

Well, 4% is probably wrong, but my coach told me I was around that figure.

Keep in mind that I was a distance runner prior to hitting the weights. I live close to the Angeles National Forest, and my running partner and I would run approx 20 mountain miles/week.

I wasn't on the juice, either. I took summer classes this summer, and my day ended around 2 pm. From 2pm to 5pm I was in the gym, lifting and getting as big as I could. I put on a lot of muscle, and I did it three way.

1. 300 grams of protein/day. About 200 of this was whey protein, the other 100 was from tuna and chicken.

2. Lots of water, and lots of green, leafy vegs (spinache, romain lettuce, etc etc.) This made me sh*t like there was no tommorw.....

3. Three hours of power lifting/day. I did chest and back on mondays, bis and tris on tuesday, legs on wednesday, and chest/shoulder/back/arms again on friday. Sat and Sun I took off.

Eight weeks later, I was nearly 30 lbs heavier, 2 inches smaller in the waist, and I could not stand drinking the protein drinks aor eating the protein bars anymore.

But, I hit my goal. Then, fall semester began, and it all went to hell. :-( .

I have lost 22 lbs in the last 5 weeks thanks to Weight Watchers. My wife is a master WW chef. Feel better and still need to get rid of another 20. Getting back to the work out as well. Makes a big difference in how I feel. In 1980 my younger brother was Mr. America and Mr. Universe (Gary Leonard, tested at 4% after the wins). I trained him at a health club I owned. I was into power lifting and held several records. How far I have come (fallen). I was once asked by a guy, "Didn't you used to be Scott Leonard?" I almost hit him. (true story) Good thing that love is blind.

Nebulaclass,

I have no shame to say I've gotten the same way. It sucks. I've gone back to the Gym & stopped eating junk. I will lose 20 to 25 lbs. to get back to about 180. The problem is, used to do heavy weight training & some power lifting for about 10 years, so my appetite is still out of whack. I stopped right after I moved to Houston 1 year ago to help run the family business. My cousin was just diagnosed with diabetes this past December, talk about a bad Christmas present.

Good Luck

Last March, I ran the LA Marathon. Ran the whole 26.2 miles. Weighed in at a tiny 190lbs. I'm 6'1".

In August, I completed an 8 week weight gaining program, where I went from 195 to 222 lbs, eating nothing but whey protein, chicken, and working out in the gym for about 2 hours/day. I got big, but my body fat was down to 4%.

In November, I became totally idle and dormant.

In December, I spent numerous hours/per shoveling fattening crap into my gaping pie-hole.

In January, I looked at my fat bag of garbage in the mirror. I look like 10 pounds of sh*t shoved into a 5 pound bag.

I'm 240lbs, and I haven't set foot in a gym in nearly three months.

My waist size has gone from a 35 to a 39.

Thanks, holidays!

I can't wait to get back into the gym on monday. I've got a lot of work ahead of me....it's amazing that my girlfriend still sleeps with me...
