Lotus V8 or the S4

Very nice and fast. Not your everyday car on the road as well

How about a Lotus Elise?

Used BMW M5? That'll kick the crap outta most cars.

Ok, then how about a 1993ish Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6? As fast as the lotus, and much more reliable.

P.S., as you can see, I didn't make a difference where the car was built. Who cares? :-) Most cars have parts / labor from the same places anyways.

1999 Viper GTS? They can be had for less than 50k and are faster than the Lotus 0-60, 1/4th and top speed (and on a road course once you have LOTS of seat time)

Also, a brand new 2003 Zo6 is just as fast as the lotus (if not faster in the 1/4th bone stock)

Humm... do small builders count?

A Factory Five racer can be had very fast for 50k, straight from the manufacturer.

Also in the same relm of performance:

97+ lotus as stated
Older NSX-type S (not type R)
....

Slightly shower (but other cars to consider)

1987 1/2 Ferrari TR (13.4 1/4th mile if you push her, and my choice)
1993+ RX7 (mid 13's, cheep)
1993+ Supra TT (stock, lower 13's)
2003 Mustang Cobra (high 12's if you are good, but common.. a mustang?)
1994 Corvette ZR1
1989 Corvette Callaway (faster than all the others over 100)
1997+ Lotus Esprit / Extige / etc... (not a street car)
Caterham S7 (can be had quite fast under 80mph)
Or, if you are feeling a little ... nuts! How about a 1980 Lamborghini Countach (mid 13's)
