"Up against the wall you redneck mother" was a Jerry Jeff Walker of Austin song. Steve Goodman did write the song you are speaking of and David Allan Coe did record it. I heard him perform it on stage back in the '70's. Now, David Allan Coe----he was an interesting individual. |

Thanks - I believe you are correct. I found the lyrics, but must download the song to make sure. More to come. Jim S. |

Tillman is right. And I think "The Perfect Country and Western Song" was the name of the David Alan Coe album. I always thought the name of that song was "Up against the wall, Redneck Mother"! These are also some of my personal favorites. I moved to Dallas right before the Urban Cowboy craze... Dallas was a blast back then... David Alan Coe, Jerry Jeff Walker, Gary Stewart, Merle Haggard... great stuff. |

That is the song. The verse you're remembering is the _last_ verse of the song |

Wayne - I downloaded "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" and that is not the song I remember. The song I remember started with " It was raining the day I went to pick her up out of prison in the pickup..." I think it might have been titled "The perfect Country and Western song" but can't remember. Any other thoughts? Jim S.

That's it! By George, that's it. I will now search for it on the Web. You are a gentleman and a scholar, and your wisdom reaches beyond Ferraris. Jim S.

This sound familiar? "Several years ago songwriter Steve Goodman told David Allen Coe that he had written the perfect country and western song for him. Coe wrote him back that he was sadly mistaken in that Goodmans You Never Even Called Me By My Name never mentioned Mama, trains, trucks, prison, or getting drunk. So Goodman added one more verse, and Coe recorded the song. For the record, heres the last verse: I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison/And I went down to pick her up in the rain/But before I could get to the station in the pickup truck/She got run over by a damned old train."

I am not a fan of C&W, but am trying to find a song released approximately 20 years ago - told the story of a guy that was picking up his friend, just got out of prison, in his pickup truck, with the dog in the back, etcetera, etcetera. A spoof on Country & Western. Anyone know artist, name or album? Thanks Jim S. |
