Can't take much credit for this one. Like I said, I had a lot of outside assitance. We also determined that the bottle in his hand is S. Pellegrino circa 1957. ;-)

With A LOT of outside help, I was able to narrow the car down to 275/340 Scaglietti Barchetta s/n 0030 MT:

Ok, I've found someone who was able to identify this as a picture of Mario Bonacia during prctice/qualifying for the 500km di Monza in 1957. He says he actually has a video tape of this event and that, sadly, poor Mario was too slow to qualify. I guess he decided to "celebrate" with a little bubbly anyway.

Jeff B., the Scaglietti-bodied 250 Monza (s/n 0442M) had the headrest. The PF-bodied cars did not.

s/n 0420M here is a good example:

http://www.barchetta.cc/english/All.Ferraris/Detail/0420M.250Monza.htm

Yes, it's true that these cars were in their prime from 1954-55, but they continued to be raced afterwards.

Of course, though I'm fairly certain, I still could be wrong about it being a 250 Monza. They shared similar bodywork with the Series I PF-bodied 500 Mondial, 735 Monza and others.

Wouldn't this picture be somewhat earlier than 1957? Maybe 1953 (Inter-Europa Cup?). I'm intrigued that there are no straps or hold downs for the hood. I've been looking for pictures to help identify - wouldn't a 250 Monza have a headrest/fin, or is that the 750/860 Monza? Very interesting!

I agree that the driver looks like Gonzalez (chunky build). I'm trying to place Gonzalez, a 250 Monza, and racing #16 together in one race at Monza (Monza 1000km?). No luck so far.

I accidentally posted this in off topic, but I knew once Wayne found it he would be on the case. My service/parts director thinks it is Jose Froilan Gonzalez (not sure of my spelling).

Thanks Wayne

Jason, you're talking about the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in 1957, a race ran by open wheel single-seaters, not sports cars.

The car in the photo below appears to be a 250 Monza Pininfarina Spyder. There were only three, 0420M, 0432M, and 0466M. I'm not sure which this is nor who the driver is, but I will investigate further because I love a good mystery!

Or mayber Bruce Halford. But it says here he drove a Maserati 250F.

Did Maserati carry the Ferrari name-plate back in the day?

A gentleman brought in this photo he took at Monza in '57. Can anyone name the Ferrari and the driver?
