Luckily I left my last line out about how my wife says I have a man crush on Matthew McConaughey. It's not like I think he's "sexy", it's just I think he's cute and has a good personality. Have fun with that one guys!

I still don't see anything "wrong" with those pics. I agree with everyone that I think she would be sexier in her driving suit next to her real car. However, she's the one that consented to be in these pics and I know I'm not gay when I look at them.

I don't think FHM is exactly known for portraying women in any form other than cheesecake. Danica is certainly beautiful. The rest of you can debate the "art" in the photos all you want =)

Jon, thanks for clearing that up. Also, I agree--they are not the most flattering shots of a clearly uncomfortable Ms. Patrick.

And, I remember the photo shoot of Gabrielle Reece. Mmm-mmm good! If I were still single....

Dave,

I think you misunderstood. Formula 3000 cars which are raced over in Europe have about 450-460 hp but the Atlantic cars make 240-250 with a four cylinder 1.6 liter engine. Specs can be seen at http://www.toyota.com/motorsports/atlantic/inside_track/specs.html

Don't let that fool you, 250 hp in a car weighing less than 1000 pounds is blazing fast. Only cars faster are F3000, CART, IRL, and F1. An Atlantic is similar in performance to a European F3 car or a Formula Renault.

Nika, I am not sure if it will benefit here career or not but I can't say the pictures looked very professional. I have seen some very professional looking articles and photos of other female athelete's such as the William's sisters and other females who are very attractive (Gabi Reece, volleyball).

The pictures of Danica looked like something you would see in one of those Biker Magazines. She didn't look very happy or cheerful in those pictures either.

Good post, Nika. Makes sense. Kind of tough for us to know what her motivation was for the photo shoot....hence all the speculation!

Jon, I must be mistaken, but I thought that Atlantic cars put out about 400 hp? I could have sworn that is what one of the Team Rahal engineers told me when they pulled her car out of the transporter at Roebling Road when I met her & Mr. Rahal last October. Did I hear it or remember it wrong?

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeez - I just had a photoshoot and wore Nomex - I feel so OVER dressed! I was going to post the pix Rob....until you made that no-nomex rule.

okay - here's the biggest debate - how much of your sexuality do you use when racing. I can't say I'm impressed with her piece in the magazine - I thought it portrayed her negatively. But that's my opinion. I would prefer to be recognized for my racing ability. Danica has racing talent - if she feels doing this will benefit her career - it's her choice.

Rob,

I watched the race and she was gaining on Jonathan Macri. At one point she tried a pass but he closed the door. She left the 4th place car in the dust.

For those of you unfamiliar with Toyota Atlantics they are one step down from an Indy car. They use a 250 hp Toyota engine.

She has some major talent!

Regards,

Jon

This is really a great result. First race in a Atlantic car. For those that haven't watched these Atalantic cars they are amazing. These are full race prepared very expensive open wheel racers. There are 20+ classes in the SCCA and Atlantics are the fastest class of all by a long ways.

Sometimes you can get lucky into a podium spot, but her 2nd fastest lap of the entire field proves she was just plain fast too.

Only thing you can say to balance the perspective at all is that she has the full support of Team Rahal. Many teams out there will have a tenth of their budget.

Congrats Dancia! I'm you're #1 fan.

Back to the topic at hand namely her racing ability. She became the first ever female to get on the podium in a Atlantic race. She finished third this past weekend in her first race.

Patrick snares a podium in her first race
Mar 23 2003 12:00AM

Team Rahals Danica Patrick made her debut in the Toyota Atlantic Championship a memorable one as she became the first female driver in the series 30-year history to capture a podium finish. Patrick piloting the #24 Argent Mortgage Company Toyota/Swift started fifth and picked up a spot on the opening lap of green flag racing when a scrum between pole sitter Luis Diaz and highly touted rookie A. .J. Allmendinger took the two out of the lead pack.

Patrick drove an aggressive race taking third from veteran and pre-season championship favorite Joey Hand on lap nine and dogging Atlantic veteran Jonathan Macri around the 2.1 mile road course.

Mid-way through the race Patricks car developed a nasty understeer. The handling problem slowed Patrick enough that she was unable to close the gap and pass Macri.

Patrick held her ground and opened a significant lead on Ryan Dalziel (fourth place car). She would eventually finish nearly nine full seconds ahead of the fourth place car.

The race was fairly steady. I thought I had a good enough car to get by Jonathan [Macri] in the beginning but I started to get a little bit of understeer halfway through the race but I ran out of adjustments so we just had to sit there and keep pushing with the problems. In the end the car was great. I think it is a reflection on how many months we have been working as a team at Team Rahal and I am pretty excited right now.

This was a great start for this program, said a beaming Bobby Rahal. I have a lot of faith in Danicas abilities or I wouldnt have given her this opportunity.

The plan is absolutely to be on top, said Patrick. This is our first race. The first race for me in Atlantics and the first race for Team Rahal in Atlantics and this is just the start. Just like I said this result is based on he amount of work that we have put into this program. The plan is to win. As a team and as a driver you want to start the year off on a good foot. Everybody agrees that it sets a good tone within the team and sets a good tone in your own mind. So that is always the objective to get up front for the first race. In the grand scheme of things it is just one race and it is not going to make or break you. Nevertheless it is always good to do well in the first outing.

TEAM RAHAL RACE NOTES: Patrick was the highest finishing rookie in the Toyota Atlantic Championship (TAC) and subsequently is the early leader in the TAC Rookie of the Year race. . .Patricks last podium appearance came at Long Beach when she won the 2002 Long Beach Grand Prix Pro/Celebrity race. . .Patrick has already surpassed her best performance for Team Rahal which came last year in the Barber Dodge Pro Series at Vancouver (4th). . .Sundays race marked Team Rahals full-time return to the Champ Car Ladder System. In 1998 Team Rahal ran Indy Lights program.

MARKETING UPDATE: Patrick had a busy media week with appearances in USA Today, ESPN.com and on George Michaels Sports Machine. . .There were a number of media features on Danica in Mexico including a feature on Patrick in El Norte one of the nations largest newspapers. Patrick attended a dinner with Argent Mortgage Company executives on Saturday evening. . . .Patrick was a feature driver for the TAC media press conference on Thursday. . .She signed autographs as part of the TAC Fan Appreciation autograph session on Saturday.

FINAL LAPS: Patricks parents (TJ and Bev) were in attendance at the race. . .This weekend the entire Team Rahal racing operation was in action. In addition to Dania's Atlantic race the team picked up a second place from Jourdain in the Champ Car World Series and Kenny Brack piloted the Pioneer/Miller machine to fifth.

They take a very classy lady racer and cheapen her with those shots. And take a look at what she is posing with, a low-riderish '57 Chevy Bel
Air.

I find her more appealing in her racing suit, slightly unzipped with her hair flowing than the other pictures, especially the last one. Not saying that she is not definitely a fox. She absolutely is. I just find these poses disrespectful of her. I wish she had not done them. Leave them to someone beneath her.

Red, Mike is right, i'm not being funny; if she's racing, she's making money... If she's doing those pictures because she wants to, that's one thing, but if she's being forced into doing them 'cause "it'll be good for her image" or some other crap like that, than that's wrong... i totally support any woman who wants to do things like that- if they want to do it... Being forced into it isn't cool...

Pictures like these, displayed publicly to the small-minded general public are what make it so hard for women to be taken seriously when competing against the opposite sex or when competing, period... Women are a species to be reckoned with and we only learn that the hard way... If she wants to do pictures like that, than that's cool and more props to her, but if it's "part of her contract", then it's garbage and she's not being treated with respect...

Hehe! So Mark, do you think that Danica needs to have her sexuality affirmed? :-) :-) :-)

Seriously, though, you hit the nail on the head--she can blow my socks of on the track (huh huh), which I admire and respect and am humbled by, and then she's presented to me like this?

Nah. Like I said before, she doesn't need to pose to have her sexuality affirmed. She just needs to say the word.

I know what you mean... She looks sexy as hell in the photos, but there's something just kinda off about her appearing like that. I think it may be a male psychology thing. It's like if you admire and respect a woman for her talent and abilities you don't really want to see her revealed in that kind of cheescake crap - thats what actresses and models are good for :-) I think that sentiment probably pisses women off, though, as most women want affirmation of their sexuality.

LOL, Rob, how stereotypically jocose...

Studies actually show that, stereotypically, men are better drivers than women because men have better spacial perception than women...

Please note that this is a study that DES did not conduct, he is merely relaying the results and he has emphasized that these results were shown, stereotypically, implying that it's only a generalization and that there are women out there who can drive the socks off of male drivers and he knows that... :-)

I believe females overall have more mental and physical genetics to be better racers than men at the top level. Now if they can drive on the interstate is an entirely different issue.

Hey Rob,

This month's FHM magazine has pictures of Danica in very little clothing and an interview.

You may enjoy this magazine.

I wish my better half would surf racerchicks.com as it appears to contain some very good content.

We're not talking motocross here. Doubtful the physical demands required by any four-wheel motorsport place a woman at a significant disadvantage to a man. That said, Danica seems to have done okay in karts, where some have broken ribs due to cornering forces.

i am all for expansion of the sport towards the fairer sex. however, i would imagine that as she climbs the motorsport ladder, her lack of brute strength (as compared to a man of similar size and age), will hurt her. at least in f1, the g-forces and endurance that the top drivers need to have is beyond a 20 year old woman - unless she works out like a candidate for gladiators (which doesn't appear to be the case from the pic).

Dave,

I have never met Danica but I have heard from some people I know who work at PTG Racing (the guys who ran the M3GTRV8's in ALMS) that she has a very hard nosed attitude and can be quite cold at times. She had a tryout with PTG in the fall of 2001 before the ACIO changed the rules that effectively banned the V8 M3's from ALMS and LeMans.

It is my understanding that she had to continually fight off the "girlracer" stereotype and that especially in the UK where she raced in Forumal Ford she was not welcomed by the male racer population.

She has incredible talent having come in second in the prestigious UK Formula Ford Festival something no other American has done.

She finished second in that race to Anthony Davidson who drove two race last year in F1 for Minardi and is BAR's chief test driver. She beat several other drivers who have gone on to F3 and F3000.

I think she will be in a Champ car within 3 years if things go right.

Regards,

Jon P. Kofod

20...? Whoa, she's young... She looks older in the picture Rob linked... That explains it, like you said, she's probably not used to the whole mainstream star thing... i hope she wasn't forced into it and that she's living out a dream and not a money/contract puppet...

Hard to say, honestly. Very guarded & shy, it seemed. Tough to engage her in conversation. My wife was with me. I would think that would make her more comfortable, but I could be wrong... Others also had the same observation of her--tough to read, tough to have more than small talk with. This is probably an asset in racing--game face, etc.--but not in a social/potential sponsor setting, esp. with her "boss" there.

But, to put it into context, she is barely 20. I can understand her shyness at all of a sudden being in the mainstream spotlight after years of relative obscurity...

DES, that is ==almost== too much information.....but not quite.

Back in October, I had the pleasure to meet Danica & her boss. Bobby Rahal. Danica is T-I-N-Y !!!! Tiny!!! Very attractive, kind of uncomfortable in a small crowd of well-behaved men & women (I hope, for her sponsors' sake, she has gotten past that), and nearly constantly speaking on a cell phone. On the final day of this event, she drove her brand-new Atlantic car on the Roebling Road track. I was driving a Can-Am car at the time, and every time she went by me (which was a lot), BOY, what a sound! And, man, can that thing hug the road! And her car handled well, too...

i'm right with you, Rob... Danica's pretty, but Nika's like- DAMN...! i regularly check out her website and her articles are pretty awesome, too... To be hot is one thing, but to be knowledgeable and friendly on top of it, is just so totally awesome...

i have a friend who likes cars and knows a bit about fixing them, too... She's the one who taught me how to check my oil and she was standing there, underneath the hood, saying all this stuff about the dip stick (not me) and checking to make sure it was at the line, etc, etc... Then she goes on to quote how many quarts of oil should be in there and all this other jazz... i don't mean to be crude, but the check engine light in my pants came on, it was ridiculous...
She has this really weird thing, too, where if she becomes, um... aroused... her neck gets itchy... If we're out in the car and she hears a Mustang roar by, she starts scratching her neck... How cool is that...?

I can't help it, these Racer Chicks (please support www.racerchicks.com) drive me crazy. They're hot, they're aggressive, and they're very fast. No more racer chicks in their racing suits are allowed on FerrariChat.com anymore, yes you Nika! I can't take it.
