I had a bout with diverticulitis about two years ago. Got an unexplainable pain in the "gut" that lasted about three days, at one point so bad that I couldn't stand without leaning against something. The doctor checked me over, gave me the diagnosis, I took the antibiotics, all was OK. I was told to eat more roughage and avoid foods with seeds in them.

Great information, James! Are you on call for medical information 24/7??

Jordan - Diverticulitis will not lead to cancer. Cancer may occur in a colon that has/is been involved with Diverticulitis, but this is an association, not a cause and effect. Two separate, relatively common diseases occurring in the same person.

Can diverticulitis lead to a serious disease? Yes. Diverticulitis is an inflammation of a diverticuli, presumably caused by infection with enteric bacteria. A diverticuli is a "pouch" formed in the lower colon (typically a "ballooning" caused by pressure within the colon). These "pouches" are small - approximately 1 cm in size - and can become plugged with fecal material. Once filled, bacteria can grow, which leads to typical inflammatory changes - rubor, dalor, tumor, calor (red, pain, growth/swelling, heat). This is all occurring in the wall of the colon. If severe enough, it can lead to perforation of the colon and big-time trouble. If untreated, sepsis, bowel obstruction, vomiting, severe pain, and death can ensue (all signs of peritonitis inflammation of the inner lining of the abdomen). Basically peritonitis occurs when fecal material spills into the abdomen (from the inside). Most diverticulitis is self-limited, and the body will "wall-off" the infection with scarring and granuloma formation. However, it can lead to perforation of the colon - not good for your health and other things.

Attacks should be 1) accurately diagnosed, and 2) treated with antibiotics. Prevention is best achieved with high-roughage diets (reduces colon pressure).

Hope this helps. See your doctor.

Havent finished reading the site Eric sent me so Im not sure if its on there or not.

James, Can Diverticulitus lead to cancerous growth in the Intestines? If not treated can it lead to anything more harmful or is it just a condition in itself?
