There was one at the track event where I was instructing this past weekend. Looked interesting in person--silver with maroon stripes. Kind of bling-bling for me, but that's just me. Sounded great on the straightaways. Broke several times, one of which put it out of commission for the forseeable future (I recall motor mounts that broke, which caused some oiling problems, which caused some ring & valve problems, which made the engine a lump). And yes, it was supercharged.

I would take one over a Z8 but thats not saying much. Seem to be under-performers for the $$.

Marty,

If you get that car instead of the 550, Your wife will run up the tap on the "accessories" list. Stick with the F-cars. You actually might be able to pass me with the 550.

I don't see the hype over Mr Shelby.

All he did was dump a huge Ford motor in an English body 40 years ago. Big deal.

He's never really done anything revolutionary....yeah, the Shelby Mustangs were pretty tough, but what were they? Ford's development with big valve heads and free flowing exhaust.

Not that the cars are crap, but I don't think he's the be-all end-all of car names.

As for the Series 1, I think it's a testament to how ineffective he is.

The Series 1 is the Pontiac Aztec of the sports car world. With his money, his reputation, and his resources, he SHOULD have built an AMAZING car. Instead, he built an ineffective, overpriced, and WAY overhyped GM crap-box.

JMHO, though.

I've heard the car is poorly built.

However, regardless of the quality of the car, because of the lack of respect and common courtesy that Shelby American shows to it's potential customers - I for one will never buy a Shelby product.

If one day I do feel the desire to own a Cobra, it will undoubtedly be a very high quality replica.

I didn't get to drive, but I did get to go on a few hot laps with Bob Bondurant driving the supercharged version around the road course at Texas Motor Speedway. I was really impressed with the handling and the speed, but then again, I think the driver was a big influence on my impressions. To me, it felt real smooth and it had tons of power, but I really did not like the Oldsmobile parts bin interior. It was a cool car, but for the money, I would rather wait for the Ford GT or something else.

"There was a car and driver review which was quite negative."

Martin:

So you understood, "I don't care who's name is on [the Series I] I wouldn't drive it without a bag over my head." as being negative?:^)

William,
I wasn't interested in buying, just curious.Did some reading about all the problems with the series 1 as you said, also many problems with the 450 hp,supercharged series ii.There was a car and driver review which was quite negative.
Just wondered if any of the chatters owned or had driven one.

WHat I have read about it is that the car was launched at a Very immature level in its development. The first owners had to return their cars to have functional convertible tops installed. Then of course GM axed Oldsmobile so where will you buy parts or service for it ?

I would bravely run away :-)
