Thanks for all the excellent advice. I just found out the current set have 40% tread left, so I've got a little while to research your other suggestions.

Best,

I run new AVS dB's on my XJ6 as of two weeks ago and am waiting to see how they grip in autocross. Keep in mind, I have dinky 225/60-16's all around.

They were wonderful up Palomar Mt. road, Ortega Highway, and Deer Creek Canyon road above legal posted speeds. It was tough for me to get them to slide and felt better then the Pirelli's and Dayton's that I've gone through now. They have only about 1,000 miles on them and are reported to get noisy after 10-15k. I couldn't justify the expense of the Michelin's at twice the cost since I think I'm going for a new set of rims.

I've heard very good things from the Michelin Pilot Sport crowd and even better about the S03's in comparison to the Michelins, fwiw. I need quality rims for quality rubber and these would be my two choices, hands down.

I've only tried the AVS intermediates, and have capped my participation there; namely, b/c my experience has been lack luster w/ the yoko AVS line of tires. AVSi's, to me, have good sheer or overall grip, but they are not at all progressive in how they grip (i.e., do not have a linear sense of traction, either they grip, or the slip), nor in the way they communicate the amount of traction to the driver. I've had two sets (second bought only b/c they were cheap, and were only intended for commuting use) and both times I found the tires to behave the same way. Further, the AVSi's are OLD tire tech (circa '80's), and as such don't have nearly the same handling charactaristics of the newer crops of tires; i.e. azenis, s03, kumho ecsta MX et. al. They just don't feel like a good tire, and they don't give feedback at the limit. Not to mention, the wet grip is TOTAL !
You shuold really consider the new Kumho Ecsta MX (not the 711'a or the 712's these are bricks in comparsion.) I hear very good things about the MX; they've put these (the MX) head to head w/ the BFG KD and the MX came out ahead, overall. The KD performed only marginally better than the MX, and the AVS sport didn't even measure up, and both tires are FAR more expensive than the MX. I'll be trying a set next. You can get the MX from tirerack, but your local discount tire will price match, and include mounting & balancing. I just did this w/ a set of track tires.

I've had excellent service through TireRack, who shipped five my tires to England via USPS in a week when I was stationed over there. Of course, I'm not buying rubber that's more then $150/ea.. fwiw.

www.discounttire.com is another good US tire source (but they're not in every state) IMO.

I'm looking into purchasing new tires for an M3 I might be getting soon and investigating costs. From past threads, wasn't everyone's general consensus that www.tirerack.com was the best source?

I'm thinking about Yokohama AVS Sport tires, but does anyone have any other suggestions, thoughts, or input?

Many thanks,
~Chris
