80% of British casualties in the last Gulf War were killed by friendly fire, sad but true. Also regrettably puts things in perspective. Clearly when you put all these men and machinery together on the battlefield there are bound to be accidents, accidents that are analysed in an effort to avoid repeating. My concern is no one appears to be learning from the mistakes... |

something like 13 british soldiers a year get killed in training excercises. the figure for the US military must be far higher. this does not excuse friendly fire incidents at all. but it does put the figure of those soldiers killed in accidents in iraq/kuwait into perspective. |

Catch 22: "Yousarrian: The're trying to kill me. Friend: Their trying to kill all of us. Yousarrian: what difference does that make?" Same deal here, bullet, bomb doesn't know friend from foe. As all of us should know, even the most complex and complete machine sometimes screw up (like our Ferraris for example). It's part of the nature of life. If you don't want dead, don't get into wars. Check out the pics on aljeezera today: gross. Art |

Jeffrey... what's your point?? A stray bullet is very different to an A10 Tankbuster blowing up a tank with a friggin missile because all the tank has is a bloody yellow sheet on the top, for the pilot to identify it as being friendly..... ??? |

I am sure the problem of unintended casualties in war will be solved just after all auto accidents are eliminated. Seems it would be easier to prevent two cars from hitting each other than an injury in the middle of a hostile battlefield in the middle of a sand storm at night. We need bombs and bullets that never fail and only kill the "bad guys". Would be nice. |

Manu, I must agree with you. With all the electronic GPS whiz-bang gizmos the soldiers carry these days to find the enemy & their own commanders, this is hard to understand. And I love it that you guys spell it "DefenCe"!!

This is the 21st century right??? Well what the F**K is going on? I think it's an utter utter disgrace that soldiers are getting killed by their own comrades because people can't tell whether they are the enemy or not... In an age of laser guided inter-continental ballistic satellite blah blah blah... our boys have F**KING flourescent yellow sheets to protect them from freindly fire... There were warnings about this after the 'blue on blue' incident 12 years ago... The MOD was (as was it's US counterpart) specifically asked to develop an proper comrade/enemy identification system so where is is? It's a travesty and f**king disgrace. There they are, risking their lives for their countries and they have to worry about getting shot at by their own side...... I can't believe it. I think that heads should roll at the British Ministry of Defence for this as well as the USA equivalent...
