yea, something unconventional alright, we drove right into the middle of baghdad ! there will still be fighting but it looks like we are closing the lid on baghdad.
on an anecdotal basis, the regime change must be nearly done since i saw christiane amanpour at out local market this morning, and don't think she would miss an opportunity to tell of our misfortune.

Oh, I gotcha...if we are "not in baghdad" as they say then how can they suicide bomb us? Good point. 2nd grade mentality those iraqis.

I know we're ten miles away, but until Aziz, or whoever made this statement, they had repeatedly denied we were anywhere near bahgdad. Kinda like the WMD issue: we destroyed everything we deny having.

How is this going to occur when the coalition forces are 100 miles from bahgdad?

It looks like they may encourage the general populous to storm the airport and attack the coalition forces. Doing so would force the coalition to either retreat or to fire on "innocent citizens", causing a huge PR problem for us. IMHO if you are attacked you shoot back, period.

If these stories are true it will be a sure sign of the svengali-like hold Sadaam and his storm troopers have on the Iraqi populace and provide ample evidence why we are doing what we are doing.

Jere,

I was wondering about that very scenario a week ago. In talking with others everyone thought it very unlikely, but I wouldn't put anything past Saddam...

Mass suicide bombings? Single file, hundreds and hundreds of them?

Civilian-dressed attacks? Fake military surrenderers turned into suicide bombers?

'We will do something which I believe is very beautiful,'' said Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf at a Baghdad news conference, adding that the Iraqis planned to strike back ''in an unconventional way.'' Asked if that meant the use of chemical weapons or other weapons of mass destruction, he quickly said no.

''What I meant are commando and martyrdom operations in a very new, creative way,'' al-Sahhaf said.

Yeah right. Bullshit.

imho nothing much happens. there might be a few suicide attack attempts tonight but little else. the info minister is just spewing so that the population doesn't just rise up right away.
the shiite cleric has told any shiites listening on the radio not to combat the coalition forces, that they are there to liberate not hurt the iraqi people. this is pretty significant since 60pct of the baghdad population is shiite and they will heed the cleric. (unfortunately they are largely living on the eastern side of town vs the airport on the west side).

Just on CNN at 8:45am this morning. The Iraqi Minister of Information was giving a briefing and said that "something unconventional will happen tonight". When pressed for an explanation, he would say nothing else except that "some mercenaries from the coalition had been airdropped into the Baghdad airport and that the story that it was controlled by the coalition was nothing but lies".

Some discussion was had with a retired US general and he said it could be 2nd grade propoganda to make people worry, or the Iraqis could use the civilian population against the coalition against the general populations wishes. Said there is still the remote chance that they may use chemical weapons as they still have the capability of doing so.

Just a thought. Does anyone know if Iraq has any nuclear capability? Could they possibly detonate a nuclear device at the city center as the coalition troops are closing in and make a major statement since they know they are going out? I heard a statement made very early in the war that if the coalition tried to enter Baghdad they would be incinerated. This sounds like a nuclear device to me. Idle threat or something possible??
