Plan a vacation to somewhere she wants to or has always wanted to go. Enjoy life away from the rat race and relax together, have fun. On one of those days, I would surprise her.

I think Nika hit the nail right on the head. You know what she likes and doesn't.

Take her hand in yours and tell her how much you love her and how much she means to you. With your other, bring the ring out not wrapped or with a bunch of hooplah, and ask her, straight from the heart with the ring in plain sight.

You could arrange for her to find in countless different ways for a unique flair, subtle or dramatic, it really all depends on the person.

Let us know once the day happens!

Matthew,

We seem to be mirroring each others lives. I just got engaged, and am in the process of buying an M3!

My advice - what's the rush? Why does it have to be tonight? If you can, give yourself time to think it through and do something really special. You can read my engagement story under "just got engaged" in the off-topic forum. It was a TON of planning, but it was something neither of us will ever forget, and had complete strangers coming up to us with tears in their eyes.

Don't know if that's an option, but if you can, postpone a bit and plan!

Good luck,
~Chris

Marcus - When is the wedding date set for? Congrats. It seems like it was very romantic. I am going to buy some flowers once I get off work and further devise my plan. Good luck to you.

I just proposed myself, here is what I did.

Bought her favorite bouquet of flowers and a box of red rose pedals. Brought those items that day(2-3 hours before) as well as the ring and gave them to the manager (planned all this before hand). She put the ring in a safe until it was time. Picked a table and had them display the flowers on the table before we arived. Once we got there everything was set. This was Valentines day so the menu was pre selected. Ordered a bottle of Italian wine w/ the appetizer (jumbo cocktail shrimp and lobster bisque as a soup). We order the main entree (crab cakes and Sole Fish). At dessert we had chocolate moose and assorted fresh berries. After the dessert the waitress brought out this crystal platter with my rose pedals on it as well as the ring box and placed on the table. One waiter came over and took my chair away and said "Your on" Got up and got on my knees and proposed to her with about 60 people around-little nervous. She started crying said yes and the place went wild! Ordered some champagne and celebrated. People kept coming up and congradulating me, it was fantastic service and food! Since my Fiance is into cooking, I had the menu for that night signed by the head chef and they presented it to her after the proposal.

Hope this helps.

Des - I was wondering when you would come around. I knew that you would have some unique ideas. I like the traffic idea a lot, it's pretty funny. If you have any more ideas in that crazy head of yours then you need to spill them.

Matthew, that's awesome, congratulations... i wish i had an idea for you, but i would have to know more about her, to help make the idea more personalized... i always thought of stopping traffic, let's say, on a busy street with lights; pull up to a light, put your hazards on and get out of the car. Go around to her side, bring her out to the front of the car, so the rest of the traffic can watch, get down on your knee and propose - everyone watching will know what's going on and not be pissed that you held up traffic... explain to her that you can stop traffic and that, if you could, you'd stop the world for her... amidst all the cheering horns, ask her if she'll make you the happiest person in the entire world and marry you...

...nah, that's cheesy, just do the cracker jack box thingie... :-)

Matthew, I see you live in Utah. If you are near Salt Lake City, and the weather is nice, why not take her up that road up to the State Capitol, and park up there right before sunset. Then, walk around and admire that stunning view of SLC & the Wasatch Valley at sunset. Use that as your backdrop to ask her in the classical fashion: on bended knee, with poetry (either made up by you or classical) and admiration, and invoking the beauty of the view as your inspiration to spend your life with the beauty in her.

Just my $0.02... Best wishes!!

You could, if you have time, "arrange" for a cop to stop you and pretend to give you a ticket, then walk around to her side and give her the ring? Pretty goofy, actually. What is wrong with a nice restaurant, a bottle of Dom Perignon '90, and taking a knee at the table?

Nika - She is definetly not a Porsche gal. Ever since she has been with me she has lost all concept for the cars she liked other than Ferrari and BMW. I pound those two car names in her brain most of the time we are together. I did tell her that I would buy her any car she wanted as long as I had my BMWs and Ferraris. BTW nice 308, I have been wanting a 308 or 328 for some time now.

Model? You're hanging with the wrong guys. I'd think a key to a nice yellow 365GTB4 would be better. Non?

Whew! All this dirty talk!!!! (Nika wipes sweat from brow)

Nika - That would be a good idea, but I don't have a model of a 365. I do have others though, 550, 360 , 355, 328, F50, F40, 512TR, most of the models in the last 15 years. I am going to take it a step further though and make it a Ferrari night. I have Ferrari cologne and some Ferrari appearal, so I am thinking of incorporating that. Thanks again, I will post how everything went tomorrow.

Matthew - don't be too hard the fellas.......they don't get out much...

You just have a super evening tonight....We'll be cheering you on...

PS - I thought tying the ring to a model of a 365GTB4 (in yellow) would be awfully romantic n'est pas?

I figured I could come to this forum and get some good points of view from mature people. Frankly, I am quite dissapointed. Nika, on the other hand has been great, thankyou for your thoughts.

Explain to her:

today, 34 years ago, a woman gave birth to the greatest human being, myself. So you figured that this is the right day to make a life altering decision yourself and would like to continue the journey of life with her together.

Okay, maybe that is not the greatest approach!

I personally never liked the idea of engagement. Either you want to or not. if you do, get married. Vegas Baby. 10 years ago and I love her more and more each day.

Engagement is like a lay-away-plan. You are not really committed but you are holding good merchandise off the market.

Boy - you guys are as romantic as a bad rash!

Matthew - my advice is to speak from the heart - tell her you adore her - her importance in your life etc - THEN ask. Do what's comfortable to you...no need to have a big production. You know her well enough to know if she's shy about the spotlight and would prefer an intimate proposal rather than in the middle of a crowded restaurant.

One thing you might want is to bring a small disposable camera in case she wants pix.....

Best wishes to you both - how can she not love a car guy! :-)

Take her to the city dump, spread a blanket, and have a picnic. That way you'll be able to determine whether she really enjoys your company. If she does not complain, propose to her.

This afternoon I am going to pick up the engagement ring that I picked out last week. I am planning on asking my girlfriend to marry me this evening. I need some good ideas on how to do it. What I have thought of doing is just taking her up into the caynon and proposing there, but I want it to be unique. Does anybody have any ideas? The would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
