its that last bit that is the problem...'repay the loans'...it isn't going to happen. the french (and germans and russians) have been holding the mortgage on saddam's 57 palaces etc, and now it won't get paid, and the places have been nationalised. sorry jacques(ass). thats what they are huddling about this weekend. they might also be worried some of the 'made in france' stuff turns out to be lethal...... |

The UN did not want the coalition to rid Iraq of Saddam. The UN never said they wanted this brutal regime out. France said they would veto this action. So why should they with France as a permanent member, have a role in the rebuilding. If it were up to France, Saddam would still be there, torturing his own people, killing Kurds, killing the Shi'ites, as long as they bought stuff from France and repaid the loans. |

If you read the news, it appears that the US doesn't want the humanitarian relief portion of the mission. The UN and non governmental agencies don't want to work for the US military in this matter, and no funds have been allocated by the UN or any other nation. If we truly are going to reinstall a civilian governement in Iraq, and we are not in there for the money, then why in the world would we want to refuse their requests? If on the other hand we are divving up the spoils of war, then Ross is 110% correct. Art |

what he is really saying is that, despite all the grief he caused, he still wants a piece. i say, let him negotiate with the former Minister of Info.Maybe jimmy carter can go to that meeting, too. |

i love that line 'Iraq must re-discover its full sovereignty via the legitimacy granted by the United Nations'. why would anybody think that approval from the biggest club of professional bureaucrats, kleptocrats, and bs artists, would 'grant' legitimacy to a free iraq? come on; this is the same group of people that has elected as the head of the commission on human rights the rep from....libya; and the head of the commission on worldwide disarmament the rep from.......you guessed it...iraq. how insane can you get? |

10:25 10Apr2003 PLATTS: France's Chirac hails end of Iraqi dictatorship Paris (AFP)--10Apr2003/524 am EDT/924 GMT French President Jacques Chirac on Thursday hailed the fall of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's government in Iraq and said he hoped the fighting in the country would end soon, his office announced. "France, like all democracies, is delighted at the fall of the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein and hopes for a quick and effective end to the fighting," Chirac's office said in a statement. "It is now necessary to create the conditions which will give the Iraqi people its dignity in re-discovered freedom. "What is urgent is to allow humanitarian aid in all its forms to be sent to Iraq without delay. As soon as possible, after the necessary phase of ensuring security, Iraq must re-discover-- via the legitimacy granted by the United Nations--its full sovereignty in a stabilised region," it said.
