i don't think that's legal, ross. they're under sixteen and there are minimum wage laws. i think a judge (or other such authority) would have to step in to mandate this in order for it to be kosher.

and who the heck is going to want two known car vandals washing their cars at $10 a pop? :-)

it's great that the boys owned up to it - that's a positive step in their long-term prospects. but you're still out real money :-(

good luck. crappy situation.

doody.

Whart - I knew you would ask me that.

State Farm will still take care of me. They are invoicing the parents and setting up a payment plan with them. Damages are $4,500!!!

Did the parents claim the reward?

interesting. they obviously don't have enough to do, but at same time come from families who could probably use some money. if state farm doesn't pay now i would suggest something along the following lines:
set them up as some sort of car washing enterprise. you buy the soap and sponges and provide the water and the driveway. they wash all the cars in the neighborhood, (and more if you put signs out or at their school). they charge something minimal like $10/car, they keep $1-2 each, the rest goes to you. 400 cars later you should be about break even, they will have learned a few lessons (don't vandalize; if bored try something creative; hard work pays off; guys with ferraris are not aholes just hard workers etc). since its spring/summer this should not be much of a hardship and their parents shouldn't mind.
just a suggestion

"I'm 100% sure it's just some bored 13yr old (without a father to whip his ass occasionally). I just made a claim with State Farm ($100 deductable). I also posted signs in the neigborhood that says:
VANDALISM
Minimum $150 Reward..."

You guys are not going to believe this! Two boys just came by with their parents and admitted to damaging my car. My sign worked and the parents busted them! They were 13yr old kids who said they were just bored. As I suspected, they don't live with their dads. That's the good news.

Bad news: I talked to my lawyer/brother in law who says I now must ask State Farm what they want me to do. I already agreed aleady not to press charges (criminal) against the boys. If insurance says to drop the claim and make the parents pay, I have a problem. Both moms have been out of work for a year. I wish I could make them do yard work, but my home is already well maintained.

Ideas?

Hell ya, John. Great idea on the sign. His little friends will report the rat bastard in for video game money. If you can, make em work it off. Lots of yard work, clean your storm drains, clean a pool if you have one, use him for your target shooting practice, (J/K) etc... That's one way he will remember not to do that again! Keep us posted.

I had someone try to pry hood emblem off my 308 causing some minor damage to hood as well as running their broken screw driver across my hood - estamate to repaint entire front clip (to ensure complete paint match) was $995....I have $1000 deductable. I chose not to do an insurance claim (which would have only met my deductable, I still would have had to bear entire cost) to keep my premiums at a low...but at $2500 I would probably do a claim...

use the insurance you have paid for and get the car fixed. the set up a video cam security system pointed towards the trail to catch this jerk the next time he tries something.

If you live in a well-heeled neighborhood where the police have little to do, i would encourage them to "take the case." We have a detective in our little village, guy caught up with some scoundrel who boosted some stuff from inside our house; treated it like a big city detective story.

I'd definately call your insurance company. At least see what will happen. You don't have to take the money if you don't want. Don't worry, your insurance company will ensure thay're not paying for prior damage.

A similar thing happened to me. My car was in a hail strom and the cost of repairs was so much it was "totaled". This was a mid-west car though so it had rust on the rockers and fenders, which was much more significant that a bunch of tiny dents. It was just a daily driver anyway.

In the end I got a nice check from the insurance company, bought my car back for a couple hundred bucks and my rates didn't go up:-)

The car is not a beater, despite the miles. It really looks great and had no real dents prior to last night. This car has 200K more miles to go! The paint was like new, minus road rash (thanks to Zaino).

Last night, some kid decided to sit on the trail next to my house and hurl rocks at my 300E parked in the driveway. I must have over 50 small dents & window chips! I did a police report. Question: Should I use my $150 State farm deuctable to fix $2,500 worth of damage to a $4,500 valued, 12 year old, 207K mile car? If it was a new car, I certainly would. But, this car already had some small dents & stuff. Am I taking advantage of the situation or do I deserve to have my car fixed like new? I value F-chatters'opinions.

What scares me the most is that sometimes I leave my Ferrari in the same spot on a trailer before a track day. Jeeezzz...
